The Greek island of Syros is an undiscovered gem rich in ancient and neoclassical architecture. Here, we’ve discovered two beautiful villas covered in handcrafted details. Our favorite? The nautical rope lamps. We did a little fishing and discovered two different approaches to their creation.

Kokkina Villa‘s rope-crocheted lamps were designed by Ilektra – the owner and his interior designer. The idea was creative, but at the same time it was a bit difficult to explain what they really wanted. After they had searched high and low for someone that could make their vision a reality, Ilektra’s mother, who has knitted all her life, offered to try.

The idea of using crochet was born, and after buying 1,000 of meters of rope from a shop in Athens, she started her unique work. They replaced the outdoor lamps with the homemade – Mom-made – lamps and the outcome was amazing!

The knitting technique was used not only for the lamps but for pergolas and poufs as well, and then they decided to sell them. They started working with local housewives who are excellent at crochet work and knitting, and composed these real handmade products. Ilektra is convinced of the beauty of the crochet and proud to be able to help his people and the Greek economy with this little business.

Finikas Villa‘s lamps were designed by the owner Georgios and his interior designer Katja Margarito Glou. The inspiration came from Georgios’ love for fishing, along with a 1950s fish tavern that used to be by the water in the Greek Islands. The ropes are new but have a used worn-out look which was quite difficult to find.

The two villas were built at the same time, Ilektra and Georgios travelled together all over Greece to find the right handmade furniture and accents to make these incredible villas a perfect piece of Greece.
