Architect Michael Sant Matches the Beauty & Drama of the Santa Monica Mountains with a Graceful Economy of Design

Inhabiting a spot of dramatic natural beauty, this strikingly modern AIA/LA Award winning home was designed in ultimate harmony with the landscape. Employing beautifully defined lines and structural composition, it’s an exquisitely crafted approach to minimalism.

Nestled high above the Pacific on a secluded peak of the Santa Monica mountains, the home is a study in light, texture and sublime geometry. Designed by award winning Sant Architects and constructed of monolithic concrete slabs, steel beams, wood and glass, the structure’s earthbound elements are punctuated by expansive walls of glass that illuminate the interiors while capturing the stunning panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, Catalina Island and the mountain terrain. The effect is both elegant and simple, infusing texture, warmth and earthiness into an otherwise contemporary context.

Modern, elegant and exquisitely detailed, this residence’s enviable placement, stunning views and graceful simplicity are flawlessly calibrated to both the natural and contemporary worlds.

Minimal in tone and style, the interiors are soothing and muted with elemental materials that are meticulously hand crafted and refined. All of the living areas feature interrelated spaces with oversized slide away doors that open out to differing perspectives and angles of the property.

The main living area with a clever slide away fireplace, dining area and fully equipped gourmet kitchen boasts some of the best views of the property and overlooks the pool and gardens. Two of the three bedrooms are on this level with the master one level below. The open air layout is paired with specially selected and contemporary furnishings including pieces by Hans Wegner, Jasper Morrison, Stefan Diez and more that complement the creative vision of the architectural environment.

The adjacent one bedroom studio can accommodate up to four and features identical design features, quality and detail and is perfect for vacationing with family and friends. The grounds are beautifully landscaped with native plants and incorporate the wild natural beauty of Topanga.

Saddle Peak is featured in our magazine here.

Please note: Along with the stunning natural beauty and wilderness of the Santa Monica Mountains comes potential hazards inherent in the unique location and topography of the area. While they are few and far between, and the property is designed to be secure and adhere to all clearance and safety measures, the area is sometimes subject to unforeseen natural disasters such as wildfire and flooding with accompanying debris flows or landslides. We encourage guests to be mindful of the sensitivity of the area and be aware of the seasonal conditions.

Around

Set above the coast in the Santa Monica mountains, Topanga Canyon is a bucolic and peaceful mountain community that straddles the Pacific coast and the San Fernando Valley.

Featuring the largest state park within city limits in the US, there are miles of wilderness and land to explore. It’s just a short drive to Malibu or Santa Monica and a half hour from the greater Los Angeles area.

The Guestbook

See what our community is saying about Saddle Peak.

This home is even more breathtaking in real life. My husband and I booked The Saddle Peak House for our wedding ceremony and stayed there for five nights. It was picturesque. The home is very well taken care of. Everything is immaculate, and the attention to detail does not go unnoticed. Everything is high quality. The beds and linens are so comfortable. We really enjoyed using the pool and hot tub during our stay. Mary, the house manager, was so accommodating and helpful. We will definitely be back!

Michael's truly breathtaking home was our hideaway for the weekend, and it was everything we imagined it might be and more. While I'm not the first guest to state this in their review, it's 100% true: This place is utterly magical and the photos absolutely do not do this place justice! We arrived on a Thursday evening just as the sun was going down, and my heart skipped a beat when we pulled into the driveway and witnessed the jaw-dropping colors and panoramic ocean views. Everything about this property - from its top-of-the-world location, to the private gated entrance, to the stunning architecture both inside and out - lends itself to a dreamlike atmosphere, the memory of which will linger with you long after you return home and wake up to real life. Mary, the property manager, met us on site to help familiarize us with the property, which is definitely necessary! The main home and guest house are far more spacious than the pictures might lead you to believe. The home is well-equipped with everything you might need: kitchen essentials, pool towels, even hand-held lanterns for anyone trekking to the guesthouse at night. Mary was extremely responsive and helpful (but not at all intrusive) during our stay. Thank you, Michael and Mary, for allowing us to experience this beautiful home. We will remember this trip for a very long time! One note I will make: This home is elevated in every way (literally and figuratively), from the wood floors to the fine furniture to the insanely comfortable percale sheets. Understandably, guests are expected to treat the home as such, and you will be required to sign paperwork acknowledging your financial liability in the event that these items are damaged during your stay. So guidelines such as no shoes indoors, coasters on wood furniture, monitoring of propane use for the pool, etc, will be a part of your stay. As long as you and your group are aware and can pay attention to these details, you will have no problem enjoying your stay at Saddle Peak.
