Black-on-White Seaview Villa

A renovated Costa Blanca villa dwarfed by the chalky, jagged mesa that forms its backdrop, this vivid white home offers a panoramic swimming pool with dueling Montgó mountain and Mediterranean Sea views. Architect Marta Woodward reimagined the alfresco-focused, tile-roofed family property, shaping it into a contrasting black-on-white minimalist getaway only minutes from the beach.

A bright white gem set at the base of a rugged Mediterranean mountain, this architectural remodel is named for its airy, alfresco living focus. Interiors are crisp, casual and minimal in an easygoing, modern beach house look, and the bedrooms offer patio access and rugged mountain views. A casual living and dining room is anchored by a designer kitchen with a checker-floored, ebony-meets-ivory look. The villa’s swimming pool and dining terrace spread brightly outside, and the landscaped garden features native grasses and Mediterranean shrubs that complement the view out to sea.

A 10-minute drive from the beach, this cottage is located on Spain’s Costa Blanca just a few minutes outside of the cheery harbor town of Dénia, which also boasts the region’s longest beach at 18 kilometers. Dénia’s Old Town is particularly picturesque, with its narrow streets, sun-splashed beach bars, and glittering harbor district known as the “Marina,” a nighttime hotspot of restaurants and waterfront tavernas. Plaza San Antonio, with its sentinel palm trees, is a local favorite, and Dénia is also home to ancient castle ruins that dominate a hilltop above the marina and house an archeological museum.

Playa de la Marineta Casiana is located only two kilometers from the home, and Platja de les Marines is the popular municipal beach that stretches continuously into other sands as it curves along the coast. The coastal town of Jávea was a Roman fishing port, and is located around the Montgó range only 11 kilometers away. Vestiges of medieval walls still surround the city, and the town’s historic residences and palaces range from the whitewashed to the golden, built of the local tosca sandstone. Jávea’s harbor rivals Dénia’s when it comes to drinking and dining options, and the town’s beach, La Granadella, is a snorkeling and paddle boarding destination.

Cyclists and hikers will find many trails in the Montgó range separating the two towns, and bikers can ride between Dénia and Jávea on an almond- and orange-tree dotted pathway. The fortified Moorish village of Benissa is a quick drive as is the adorable fishing village Calpe, where the daily catch is served fresh at beachfront restaurants.
