Brutalist Beach Bungalow

A five-minute stroll to the beach or 10-minute trek to the surf breaks, this newly constructed beach bungalow grew out of a former hacienda’s equestrian zone, a sleek new space that’s now dense with ginger, birds of paradise, orchids, and bougainvillea. Newly updated by its creative owners, a chef-artist and graphic-designer-turned-writer who reside in the property’s original hacienda, the house makes a great base for beachgoers, surfers, and stargazers ready to unwind.

Newly polished and tropical, this breezy cabana was created with custom built-ins (couch, bed platforms and desks) and sunken, secret garden-styled shower stalls lined in colorful local tiles. A plunge pool anchors the contemporary outdoor living space, a covered patio of angular concrete volumes topped by contrasting breeze blocks, insulated by leafy landscaping.

AROUND

A relatively undeveloped beach destination on the Pacific coast of Guerrero, Troncones and La Majahua village are favorite romps for Mexican families and surfers headed a bit north out of Zihuatanejo. If Troncones is little known, its smaller neighbor La Majahua is truly “off the beaten path,” a wee fishing village and bohemian beach community at the end of a gravel road offering locally-owned taquerias and fruit stands, and a handful of cafes and market stands.

Coconut palms curve along the beaches, with some spots—Troncones and Saladita—the picks of surfers for the left-rolling reef breaks. Eco tours in the area include sea turtle watching and kayaking in the La Boca Estuary. Fishing charters leave from La Majahua seeking game fish large and small, including sailfish and wahoo, bonita and dorada. Guided horseback riding along the beach and into the jungle is a favorite tour, and the nearby lagoon offers Audubon-Society-quality birdwatching. Adventure seekers (spelunkers) can check out the local Cueva de la Majahua, an unlit cave with stalactites, stalagmites, and small rimstone pools.
