Known as Spanish Harlem or El Barrio, the neighborhood is one of the city’s most iconic, known for its lively spirit and immigrant history. In the years before WWII, the neighborhood was home to immigrants from all over Italy and was once home to the largest Italian population in the US. This was the original “Little Italy” of NYC. Though most Italians moved out of the area by the 1970s, replaced by new arrivals from Puerto Rico, remnants of Italian Harlem remain. Grab a slice at Patsy’s Pizzeria and Bar, a 75+-year-old landmark. Plan ahead and pull whatever VIP strings you’ve got for a reservation at the legendary Rao’s, a restaurant dating from 1896, where regulars supposedly “own” the tables.
Today, Puerto Ricans have been joined by newer Latin arrivals, and the neighborhood is known for its colorful carnivals, pulsing street music, and boisterous block parties. Thomas Jefferson Park is 3 minutes away on foot along the East River, with a running circuit, basketball courts and a baseball diamond, as well as handball courts and tons of activities for the kids. There’s an outdoor pool that in summertime becomes the preferred spot for firing up family barbecues after a day of splashing. El Museo del Barrio, founded in 1969, is the country’s largest Latinx/o institution, celebrating Puerto Rican and Latin American culture and art. Central Park stretches into the neighborhood at Central Park North and the Harlem Meer, and the heart of Manhattan is about 15 minutes on foot.
