<p>Located down a rustic farm road in the hills of Ostuni in the Puglia region, this traditional trullo has been beautifully and thoughtfully restored with a careful attention to its historic authenticity and detail. Built over one hundred years ago, the structure is one of many unique to the region and is a faithful example of the authentic construction and prehistoric building techniques throughout the area.</p>
<p>Originally used as a temporary shelter, the structure's conical shapes and arched stone interiors were carefully preserved and restored by a Milanese architect whose love for Puglia and respect for its ancient forms, colors and original materials is well represented here. Constructed using locally sourced white-rosy limestone, the home has been brought back to life in all of its striking beauty.</p>

<h2 id="artnouveaumadenewincentralpalermo">Art Nouveau Made New in Central Palermo</h2>
<p>A noble Palermo space renovated and meticulously restored by its artist/designer owner Giuseppe Amato, this apartment has been celebrated for its interior design details. Walls are subtle shades of natural lime, wood doorways date from the Art Nouveau era, and marble and original tiles line the floors.</p>
<p>Three double bedrooms stand as interior design temples, one restored to its look from the 1900s, with an oak bed by Ernest Basile, the designer of the neighboring Massimo Theater. A second bedroom features upcycled bathroom cabinet originals reinvented as bedside tables, with a bespoke lamp by the owner and an oversized iron and wood bed at its center, plus a pair of balconies. The third bedroom, the apartment’s largest, is distinguished by a chess-playing balcony, a bespoke iron and wood canopy bed by Guiseppe, plus a classical music collection of more than 300 albums, with a record player.</p>
<p>The living room is a temple to modern design, with Wassily armchairs by Marcel Breuer, a Saarinen table, handcrafted leather sofa and early 1900s-vintage patterned floors. Surrounded by books, the room is cozy and distinguished, anchored by an owner-created wood and iron dining table and Parentesi lamps by Achille Castiglioni.</p>
<p>Original wood beams cross the kitchen, over exposed tuff bricks with modern appliances and a view over the lush courtyard. Bathrooms are artworks, created according to themes—Dirigen Ginico and Love—with contrasting color palettes and sleek fixtures. There’s a reading room that doubles as a dining area, and guests can select an in-home private chef menu of Sicilian specialties unique to Palermo’s elite.</p>
<h3 id="around">Around</h3>
<p>Located in an Art Nouveau era building in Palermo’s Politeama-Libertà neighborhood, the building offers a great base for exploring downtown Palermo and the city’s busy port. Both the Politeama and Massimo Theaters are easily walkable as is Palermo’s old town, the latter reachable in a 10-15 minute walk. Fine-dining and family-run eateries both crowd the streets of the neighborhood, a lively, mostly residential area of indie shops and elegant Italian boutiques and theaters. Rich in Art Nouveau architecture, the neighborhood’s English Garden has palm trees, statues and elegant fountains. The Palermo Port is Sicily’s biggest Mediterranean harbor, home to huge passenger ferries as well as private pleasure boats and smaller cruise ships. Street vendors sell simple meats and fish dishes, and the area is at once industrial and scenic, walking distance from the historic center with a rugged mountain backdrop.</p>

<h3 id="artisticartnouveauinnoblepalermo">Artistic Art Nouveau in Noble Palermo</h3>
<p>Created by artist and designer Giuseppe Amato in the heart of Palermo’s Politeama Libertà district, this second-story Art Nouveau apartment for six has been expertly updated, its creative details landing it in the pages of <em>Marie Claire</em> magazine and The Book. Designer touches include 1970s opaline lamps, eclectically overflowing bookshelves and beautifully patterned, meticulously preserved floors.</p>

<h2 id="medievalinspirationinthecroatiancountrysidenearthesea">Medieval Inspiration in the Croatian Countryside Near the Sea</h2>
<p>Taking its cues from ancient Roman villas, this countryside residence revels in its verdant rural setting, built—as historic estates were—around enchanting courtyards and contemplative patios for rest and rejuvenation. And this four-bedroom estate brings the medieval vibe indoors, too, in rooms crossed by sturdy timbers and laid with stone floors. Most importantly, the property hearkens to days of a serviced life, with guests enjoying a private chef, concierge and housekeeping service daily, plus daily breakfast. </p>
<p>Each bedroom is furnished with textiles from Provence that fit the rustic-elegant architecture, accented by hints of Moroccan and Indian styling. The primary room offers pool views and direct access, a king bed, an in-room lounge area, and a bathroom with both a shower and tub. Two additional bedrooms feature king beds and en-suite bathrooms, with private garden sitting areas. The final bedroom has a pair of twins with a private bathroom, and is ideal for families.</p>
<p>A grand fireplace fills the living room. The outdoor infinity pool brims with heated saltwater and covers 14 meters. An organic world of play and rest has been created for children. And the outdoor lounging pergola offers a kitchen, al fresco dining, a full living room and outdoor cinema.</p>
<h3 id="experiences">Experiences</h3>
<p>In addition to daily breakfast and the full-time staff (concierge, chef, housekeeper, gardener), guests can arrange for yoga, massage and other wellness therapies, and enjoy a private Adriatic tour to a beach, cocktail in hand. Plus, there’s a Tesla charging station for striking out on independent adventures. Pets are welcome for an additional 60-euro charge daily.</p>
<h3 id="around">Around</h3>
<p>Set in the well-preserved medieval town of Sveti Petar u Šumi, in the heart of the Croatian region of Istria, the property offers rural tranquility paired with easy access to the enchanting countryside and the Adriatic coast. Poreč and romantic Rovinj are each less than a half hour’s drive from the property, and the medieval town of Motovun, with its impressive Roman amphitheater is about 35 minutes from the villa. Istria is often referred to as Croatia’s “Tuscany,” a rolling green region famed for its foods, including coveted truffles, wines, and rich heritage. Motovun existed prior to its medieval heyday, but the town’s stunning fortified buildings and magnificent hilltop castle root it firmly in the era. Surrounded by the vineyards of the Mirna Valley flanked by the St. Marco forest, Motovun is great for gastro/oeno tourism, but also outdoor adventures including hiking, mountain biking, and even paragliding. The town hosts an annual indie film festival as well.</p>
<p>Local Sveti Petar u Šumi is named for its Benedictine monastery dating from 1174, and the 16th-century Paulines Monastery and Church of Saint Peter and Paul is a must visit. The nearby town of Poreč occupies a curve in the Istrian peninsula, its historic old town famed for its sixth-century Basilica with gem-encrusted Byzantine mosaics, and a striking coastline cut through with sparkling turquoise bays, small harbors and the Baredine Cave, worth a visit for its stalactites. Rovinj is a fishing town on a dramatic headland, with an old town of stacked houses and cobbled streets crowned by the church of St. Euphemia. The town’s beaches are mostly small pebbled stretches or blonde rocks that spill into the turquoise Adriatic, and there’s an archipelago immediately offshore, with more than a dozen islands and islets.</p>

<p>Created by designer Andrea Radovčić to fuse medieval stature with contemporary luxuries, this Mediterranean-styled villa spreads across a country plot in verdant Istria, some 30 minutes from the Croatian seaside, in a well-preserved medieval village. Each of the villa’s rooms opens to the outdoors for easy relaxation poolside and daily breakfast is included.</p>

Nestled on hilltop just a few minutes from the sea and the nearest mountain, the house invites you to disconnect and return to yourself. Inside the old ruin, a contemporary interior.

<h2 id="aruinsrebirth">A Ruin’s Rebirth</h2>
<p>Enamored with a hilltop ruin that was once a working olive mill, and witness to its continued collapse over time, the new owners of this wholly original hilltop holiday home came to the crumbling property’s rescue. Retaining the original structure, an antique mill, they reinforced its tall, stony walls with the addition of sleek new construction built right inside the old walls. Today, three bright, contemporary bedrooms reveal raw concrete and exposed wood elements held within the exterior embrace of old stone. The triple-level, generously terraced home offers views of the scrub-covered inland mountains and panoramas across dramatic, olive- and almond-dotted hills to the Mediterranean.</p>
<p>A pool below faces the Gulf of Valinco in the distance, and a newly-built, upper-level terrace looks out to the wild mountain backdrop. This terrace artfully reveals the ruin’s rustic edges where old and new collide at door level and creep upward toward the tiled roofline. The building’s sea-facing façade also shows the old and new structures coexisting harmoniously, with the home’s third level marked by a round window, rising up beyond the jagged old stone. A vegetable garden, almond trees, Corsica’s signature, aromatic maquis scrub and low-lying vineyards complete the rural Mediterranean picture, along with neighboring sheep and cows.</p>
<h3 id="around">Around</h3>
<p>A bold, if peaceful, countryside estate, this house and pool occupy a hillside near the Mediterranean coastline inland from Corsica’s southwestern Bay of Propriano. The closet Propriano beaches are minutes by car from the home, with soft white sands pocked with rocky outcroppings and waters ideal for nautical activities and swimming. Located in the greater Valinco Gulf area, the neighboring port town of Propriano dates mostly from the early 19th century, with its structures dating back to Greek and Roman times mostly destroyed by pirate raids of the 18th century. The town’s small harbor is home to modest fishing vessels, and there’s a pleasure port for gleaming yachts and a port for ferries to Sardinia and France as well as commercial carriers. Built around a main street and square, the town’s traditional stone buildings are both residential and home to shops, cafes, and bars. Fishing guides are available in town, and the Plage de Lido, about a kilometer outside the community, is a popular spot for water sports.</p>
<p>Nearby, the coastal village of Campomoro is a beachgoers’ favorite and the inland town of Sartene is classic Corsica, a warren of steep, old, stony streets and magnificent sea views. The Filitosa archeological park area is home to neolithic carvings and stones. Taking the single-lane country roads will land you in quiet villages clinging to hillsides, rustic vineyards and farms, and wild, untamed natural wonders such as crashing mountain cascades and chilly swimming holes, moss-covered footbridges and forest paths, and high altitude lakes and streams.</p>

<h2 id="acontemporarycollaborationbystudiotoffandvipp">A Contemporary Collaboration by Studiotoff and Vipp</h2>
<p>With three queen bedrooms and two baths, this minimalist villa indulges guests in its subtlety and serenity. Studiotoff and Vipp collaborated to create the softly sophisticated house that won Archilovers Best Project 2023.</p>
<p><em>Il dolce far niente</em> is easily attained at the minimalist country getaway, that invites poolside lounging, al fresco dining under the stars in the shadow of the twisting olive trees and cooking up a feast in the signature Vipp brand open-concept kitchen with Miele appliances and a Vipp sofa in the lounge area.</p>
<p>Seamless indoor/outdoor living comes naturally here, as the living room doors open entirely, allowing for breezes and natural light to infuse the villa. An outdoor shower adds to the al fresco focus, and the villa’s rooftop offers panoramic, classic Italian country views.</p>
<h3 id="around">Around</h3>
<p>A 20-minute drive from the property lands you in the “white villages” of Ostuni and Cisternino, both occupying olive grove blanketed hillsides. The home is set in a sea olive trees at the end of a country road and makes a sophisticated base for exploring the region, including the crystalline waters of the Adriatic sea and its rock-studded, coved beaches, the nature reserve of Torre Guaceto (about 30 miles), as well as the lively historic port towns of Polignano a Mare and Monopoli. The Taranto Cathedral is 29 miles from the home and Castello Aragonese is 30 miles.</p>
<p>Puglia is famed for its dry stacked, conical trulli homes, former agricultural storages that today are mostly fairtytale private getaways dotting the rural landscape. Thousands of trulli are concentrated in and around Alberobello, a UNESCO classified location that’s a quick trip away. Other picturesque villages of note nearby include Cisternino and Locorotondo and the nearby ‘white village” of Ostuni. The nearest beach is about a half-hour’s drive away along the Adriatic Sea, while the Ionian Sea, filling the space between Italy’s boot heel and toe, is a bit further afield. Beyond its famed trulli homes and whitewashed villas, Puglia is known for labyrinthine villages, crystalline waters and fragrant herbs, not to mention olive oil, fresh seafood and stellar garden-to-table gastronomy. The region offers a world of tastes and gastronomic possibilities, and the property’s olive grove produces a house oil, as do dozens of neighboring groves. Area vineyards offer tastings and tours, and the fresh catch from harbors on both the Ionian and Adriatic coasts is not to be missed.</p>

<p>A blend of minimalist aesthetics, this vivid modern structure was designed by Studiotoff to stand in contrast to its earthen surroundings in an ancient olive grove in Puglia. <h2 id="astrikingtimberedlakehouseonaprivatepeninsula">A Striking Timbered Lake House on a Private Peninsula</h2>
<p>Set on a rugged Norwegian peninsula, this four-bedroom villa looks every bit the warm, modern chalet for all seasons. With <a href="/property/lakehouse-moss">a nearby sister house, Lakehouse Moss</a> offering additional space for larger groups, the four-bedroom home includes two double bedrooms on the ground floor (one topped by a single bunk), and two upstairs bedrooms (one with two single beds, another with a double). One of the home's four bathrooms includes a tub, and all come equipped with showers.</p>
<p>The home’s common areas are elegant and contemporary, with crisp, contemporary furnishings, plush seating and refined cooking and dining areas for eight. Oversized picture windows offer breathtaking views, and the home feels chalet-like with its abundance of warm wood.</p>
<p>Panoramas continue on outdoor terrace spaces, with seating areas, a fire pit and barbecue, plus a sauna and a bubbling jacuzzi under the stars. <h3 id="around">Around</h3>
<p>Located in Norway’s picturesque Vrådal region, this home stands opposite a lake, ready for water sport adventures—fishing, kayaking, SUP exploring, and boating. In wintertime, the frozen lake creates a private ice-skating rink. And in summertime, the lake’s clear waters are great for swimming and splashing. The area is ripe for outdoor adventure, with cycling and hiking trails in the warmer months and snowmobiling and husky-driven sledding in the snow. A ski resort is a 10-minute drive from the property, as is a beautiful golf course.</p>
<p>Though it feels isolated, the home is a 10-minute drive to restaurants, shops and a supermarket in the town of Kviteseid, a village along the Vrådal’s Telemark Canal. The Tveitgrend Trail offers either a 7.6 kilometer loop or a shorter 2.5 kilometer trail (Veslerunden) along Lake Bandak, a body of water lined by steep cliffs and old-growth forests. Rock climbers should head to the 110-meter high wall at Sundenuten, a terrain with more than 100 marked routes suited for beginners to expert climbers.</p>
<p>The charming village of Vrådal is about 10 kilometers from the home, home to the ski resort and mountainous forests cut through with paths for cyclists. Hardangervidda National Park is about 45 kilometers away, a mountainous park with rich wildlife, including reindeer, musk oxen, and dozens of bird species. Snowshoers and cross country skiers love to explore the park in winter months. The historic village of Notodden (40km) is the sightseers’ destination in the area, a UNESCO World Heritage site for its industrial heritage and hydropower.</p>
