An original stone colonial cottage with 21st-century updates, this hilltop vacation home rental in New York was updated in 2019 by a young Brooklyn-based couple who love travel, the outdoors, food and music, and hope to share their love of all those things—plus Columbia County—with their guests.
The house occupies 16 leafy acres near the charming town of Hudson, and you’ll be hard-pressed to leave it, given the pretty backyard pool, half-court basketball, woods to roam, and its fully refurbished kitchen and low-key atmosphere. It’s a cheery farmhouse getaway, ideal for families or friends seeking seclusion and easygoing outdoor recreation—a manicured, weekend-in-the-country outpost oozing local charm.

This vacation home rental in New York is only 120 miles north of New York City and 15 minutes by car to the upstate community of Hudson. Long a favorite retreat of celebs, urbanites and industrialists, Hudson’s tidy streets reveal curlicued Victorian houses, stately Queen Anne mansions, and a main street and downtown area straight out of a Norman Rockwell painting. When autumn inflames the foliage, Hudson’s pretty streets fill with leaf peepers, but there’s plenty to do in town year around, given the wealth of restaurants and cafes, vintage and antique shops, art galleries and even cocktail dens and dive bars.
Design lovers come for Hudson’s many furniture stores, curated spaces both vintage and modern, packed with mid-century originals and designs by local makers and woodworkers. Several craft brewers call the Hudson area home—Suarez and Claverak Brewing among them, and less than 15 minutes from the house. The home is also located around the corner from Churchtown Dairy, a local biodynamic farm, selling cheeses, milk, and produce and offering tours. Hikers love the area around Hudson, and the Catskills offer miles of strenuous hiking paths as well as gentler family walks. Winter ski resort access at Hunter or Wyndham takes under an hour, and Butternut is about a half hour’s drive.
