AROUND
Located on the rural outskirts of Antiparos town (known locally as Chora), these vacation homes for rent in Greece are walking distance from the blue-and-white village’s flowering town square and picturesque port. Antiparos is one of the Cyclades' lesser-traveled landmasses, yet its whitewashed, bougainvillea-draped environment lives up to every Greek isle dreamscape. Cats comb the stone streets, beaches wrap around village ports, and narrow alleys reveal artisan boutiques and free-flowing, music-filled tavernas.
The island’s top attraction—besides summertime resident Tom Hanks—is Antiparos Cave, a 100-meter deep, stalagmite and stalactite strewn cavern remembered as a temple to the Goddess Artemis. The cave’s oldest stalagmite is believed to be Europe’s oldest, at 45 million years old. At the cavern’s entrance, the blue-doored, 18th-century chapel Agios Ioannis Spiliotis is worth a peek. Another sanctuary to see is just off the Antiparos coast on Despotiko Island. Boat tours travel to the island regularly, and in addition to the archeological site, Despotiko’s beaches are well worth the effort, especially Livadi. Surfers should head to Livadia beach back on Antiparos Island, and Soros beach is well-loved for its long stretch of sand and deep blue waters.
Antiparos south is known for its underwater caverns, and sea caving and touring the coves is a must. Or stay above ground and rent a bike or scooter to tour the rugged island. Although lower-key than its neighboring Cycladic islands when it comes to nightlife, evenings out on Antiparos promise a slightly retro, if buzzy, street scene. Chora’s main square comes alive after dark with music, a crowd of boisterous and gossiping locals, and a handful of bars and cafés in the village square.
