Overlooking the rugged northwestern coast of the Mediterranean, above the Valldemossa/Deia coast road, this villa for rent in Mallorca is positioned to take advantage of the island's great natural beauty and historic treasures. Winding up a narrow 'camino' through ancient olive groves, the former 13th-century monastery is surrounded by panoramic views of emerald bays and dramatic cliffs facing the Mediterranean.
Restored with a light touch, the stone building's interiors feature the original timbered ceilings, limestone, and tile, with seamless updates that keep it simple. Carefully preserved with just the smallest of interventions that keep its monastic simplicity intact, it makes an ideal spot for meditative retreats and sun-filled holidays in nature.
There are two reception halls, one of which used be an olive press room or ‘tafona’ and a smaller sitting room with an inglenook fireplace, perfect for the cooler months. There are three double bedrooms on the ground floor that lead out to the terrace and swimming pool and two additional double bedrooms on the upper floor, with room for up to 10 guests. The rooms are bright and spacious with raw and elemental materials and finishes and simple, rustic furnishings.
The grounds are surrounded in colorful Mediterranean gardens around the pool that reaches out towards the sea, with dining and lounge areas that are perfect for taking in the sunset.
AROUND
Just outside of the enchanting village of Deia (15 minutes by car or 35 minutes on foot), you are located in the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Serra Tramuntana mountain range on the northwest side of the island. A jumble of lovely tiled-roof villas perched among the mountain's dramatic slopes, Deia's narrow cobblestoned lanes, quiet historical center and endlessly picturesque and sheltered location has drawn many bold-faced names throughout its history (you can visit poet and novelist Robert Grave's home, which is now a museum). Protected from mass tourism by its rugged location, it's remained a laid-back hidden gem that attracts the A-list, artists, wanderers and travelers who respect its tranquil and informal vibe. Cala Deia is the closest beach (15 minutes by car), a rocky cove with two restaurants. The closest sandy beach is in the nearby Port of Sóller. A 20-minute drive, the old fishing town has become a popular holiday resort destination with its large, sheltered bay and harbor, and the turn-of-the-century tram which travels between Palma and Sóller.
The villa is also the perfect starting point for hiking and biking where the GR221 long-distance route winds through the range offering absolutely stunning views and scenery. Palma is just a 30-minute drive and these days has become more like a mini Barcelona, with stylish bars, cafes, restaurants, and shopping and the stunning Cathedral of Palma La Seu at its heart. The famous Santa Catalina food market on Saturday afternoons with its “Tardeo” time turns the streets into a big meeting point of people, food, and fun.

Deia, Mallorca, Spain. Nearest airport: Palma International (36km, 30-40 mins). Car hire is essential. Smaller cars (i.e. VW Golf or similar) are better suited to the road that leads up to the property.
