AROUND
Located in southwestern Crete, at the base of the village of Kamilari, the house is within a 15-minute drive from the famous seaside village and "Hippie Caves" of Matala. The Neolithic caves were carved by prehistoric people and made famous in the 1960s as a Bohemian colony and can be toured today.
The area's Blue Flag beaches of Matala, Kommos and Red Beach are protected by the EU's Natura 2000, established to ensure the survival of its threatened species and habitats.
Most notably, the Minoan palace of Phaistos, dating back to the middle or late Minoan Bronze Age is less than a mile from the house. Set high on a hill overlooking the Messara plains, the palace ruins are framed by the Asterousia mountains with several small villages to the south, and the Lasithi mountains to the East.
The historic old port town of Chania along the northern coast with its Venetian harbor, seaside palaces and busy resorts is a two-hour drive and the medieval archeological heritage village of Maroulas is situated just a few miles from the Venetian harbor town of Rethymno.
