Upper Kingsburg, Nova Scotia, Canada
Architect Brian MacKay-Lyons Forges a Collection of Diverse Habitats

The owners of these cabins describe their location as being “at the end of the Earth… a farming and fishing village that had completely died, a ghost of a lost village at the end of the Earth, with just the bones left.” Today, the site is a collection of rental properties with very cool design sensibilities. Surrounded by sea and mountains, the little complex started as an architectural experiment, with temporary buildings and creative gatherings, but gradually evolved.

Designed by architect Brian MacKay-Lyons, the site was once a farm but was in ruins until he started to transform it. At first, it was all about experimental architecture and creative gatherings, then he decided to create something more sustainable. Today, it’s an eclectic collection of architecturally diverse properties, from a converted 19th-century schoolhouse to a creative modern two-story cabin.

Shobac - Upper Kingsburg, Nova Scotia, Canada | holiday lettings

It’s a really remote and wildly beautiful setting – ideal for getting away from it all, writing a book, or even playing a trombone on the beach (it has been known to happen). The entire complex can be booked, making these cabin rentals in Nova Scotia perfect for large groups or events.

The homes are also eco-conscious with an organic vegetable garden, as well as solar energy. The sheep roam freely and there are trout ponds along with a shared  BBQ area and a communal fire pit.

“If you’re looking for Motel 6, you don’t come here,” say the owners. “If you’re looking for nature and a physical relationship to nature — kayaking, swimming, surfing, fishing — you come here. If you want to be alone and write a book, you can do that as well.”

UPPER KINGSBURG

The peninsula is very isolated, but it's also close enough to urban landscapes to keep all kinds of guests amused. Across from the house are the LaHave Islands, which can be reached by kayak. The property is also near Mahone Bay, which has around 460 islands, as well as little towns like Chester and Bridgewater, a little fishing village called Bluerocks, and the UNESCO World Heritage Town of Lunenberg. Halifax is 1 1/4 hours away, and Cape Breton is slightly farther.

The owners offer horseback riding lessons in the summer, and there are folk art and music festivals in the nearby village. There is no public transport, and a car is recommended.

Enough House 2 Br 1 Ba Sleeps 5 Min 7 nights

We love the juxtaposition of traditional with modern in this cool little holiday rental in Nova Scotia. With its traditional gabled roof, it has old-fashioned sensibilities, but its Corten steel exterior and strong angles lend it a much more modern feel. The interiors, with their simple design and mixed modern and vintage furnishings, are a real treat. A dramatic 24ft wide corner window cuts a slice out of the lower level of the house and looks out over the valley to the north. Another 12ft wide window offers views of Hirtle’s Beach in the distance. There are two terraces, one with a fire pit – which is great for hanging out under the stars. The house can sleep five guests on two queen beds upstairs and in a sleeping area on a plinth on the ground level. There are also two single beds in a loft that can be accessed via ladder from the upstairs.

Shobac Cottages 2 Br 1 Ba Sleeps 5 Min 7 nights
from CAD$214 /nt
We love this row of four little wooden boxes, sitting on a rugged coastal outcrop in Nova Scotia. Each is a fantastically simple but elegant space, positioned to make the most of the wild landscape surrounding it, but also offering all the comforts of modern design. The cottages were inspired by boats – so living in them is a little like living inside fishing boats. Dubbed “frugal chic” by their owners, the cabins are rustic and simple. With their exposed framing and simple decor, they’re basic but also very comfortable. Each of the cottages has a second level loft with a queen bed upstairs, and a second bedroom downstairs on the main floor with two twin beds. There are two additional overflow sleeping places on the living room raised plinth. One of the four has an additional bathroom with a Jacuzzi bathtub upstairs, and it is fully insulated for year-round use (please ask for this specifically, if required).

Schoolhouse 2 Br 2 Ba Sleeps 5 Min 7 nights
from CAD$357 /nt
A 19th-century schoolhouse, it retains many original features, and lets its history speak for itself. Uncluttered, with strong lines and ample space for up to five guests, it boasts beautiful views of the Atlantic coastline. Dating back to 1830, it has clapboard walls, a cedar shingled roof, pine floorboards, and original windows from the period. On the main level, the ‘great room’ stills feels like the original schoolhouse, and its open-plan layout has kitchen, dining and living areas, with a freestanding wood stove and restored wooden benches. The second floor has two bedrooms – a master with queen bed and modern wood stove, and a bunkroom sleeping area with two twin mattresses. Downstairs there is a sofa bed that can also sleep two. The house has its own six-person hot tub on a deck overlooking the ocean, and a private barbecue.
