A Monastic Conversion Steeped in History

Located in lovely seclusion above the Mediterranean, this historic compound is just outside of Monterosso al Mare and short drive to the famed UNESCO site of Cinque Terre.  The historic complex was first documented in the early 13th century and was home for a community of Benedictine monks. Comprised of two separate historic buildings, the monastery to the south and a simple church to the north, the structure features a traditional rectangular nave and a semi-circular apse. There are pre-existing stones and evidence of an even earlier structure with an additional restoration that was performed in the early 15th century. 

The monastery's simple construction joins the church, with semi-circular arches and large columns dividing the property into two separate wings united by an internal covered courtyard. The main wing features a small living room with a fireplace that sits adjacent to a large and fully equipped country style kitchen and one of the five bedrooms and private bath. 

The large downstairs living room features enough space for everyone to gather around the fireplace as well as a dining room for up to twelve. There are also two small bedrooms with a bathroom here. Passing through the covered courtyard is the entrance to the other bedrooms with one double bedroom and bath on the ground floor and a two bedrooms with a bath and a small living area upstairs with a sofa bed for up to two additional guests.

Restored and decorated to highlight the historic character of the structures, each of the rooms are simply and comfortably furnished with local antiques and charming handpicked pieces. There is a unique wine cellar that was originally built in the 15th century with beautiful fantailed vaulted ceilings and large pillars where you can enjoy the local vintage. The expansive grounds are beautifully maintained with plenty of areas to dine al fresco, enjoy the seasonal pool and take in the panoramic views across the sea.

AROUND

The Spezia region sits along the Ligurian Coast comprised of the "The Five Lands" of Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore and is just a short distance from stunning UNESCO heritage site of the Cinque Terre. This is a rugged stretch of the Italian Riviera and is part of the National Park. The beautiful central village of colorful terraced homes is perched along the cliffs overlooking the sea and is one of the most visited spots in Italy. Connected only by paths, boats and trains the most amazing parts of the village are thankfully free of cars. 

The nearby town of Monterosso is divided by a tunnel into two distinct parts: the old town and the new town and is ideal for walking and features the only extensive sandy beach in Cinque Terre. The daily boat service by Navigazione Golfo dei Poeti during summer is the best way to go from village to village and admire the stunning coastline from the sea.
