OAHU'S FAMOUS BREAKS
Oahu’s famed north shore is well known as the surfing capital of the world with its enormous swells that attract the best of the best. The turn of the century sugar plantation town of Haleiwa is at its epicenter and is a State Historic, Cultural and Scenic District with a well-preserved and atmospheric historic center with cafes, bars, galleries and shops.
In the winter months though the area is all about surfing. Starting at Haleiwa and extending for eight miles, the coast will be packed with world-class surfers riding the swells at Banzai Pipeline, Sunset Beach, and Waimea Bay.
There’s, of course, plenty of the island nearby and beyond to explore including Laniakea or Turtle Beach where you’ll likely encounter the sweet greenback turtles, Peacock Flats near Mokuleia Beach, and Keaena Point for hiking and Waimea Valley Park. Thought to be a place of healing by the local Hawaiians, the 1,800-acre park is home to some of the world’s most unique plant species.
Don’t miss the professional cliff divers who put on a show that is a must-see. Honolulu is just under an hour south.
