A 19th-Century Nobleman's Home in Puglia

Discovered in a state of semi-abandonment, this 19th century neo-classical villa for rent in Italy was brought back to its original beauty following its purchase from the local priest. Originally built by a noble merchant family from nearby Lecce, the villa sits on the site of a 17th-century chapel, which is still standing today and from where you can enjoy the gentle breezes and amazing views of the valley below.

Elegant and timeless, the restorations were an inspired and respectful labor of love, that have preserved every graceful feature while infusing it with a few spirited, modern elements and leaving its soul and enduring beauty undisturbed

Constructed of local limestone with terrazzo floors and dramatic vaulted interiors, the design's grand proportions and unique details are typical of the area, staying true to its southern Italian roots.

Situated on a ridge overlooking miles of olive groves and vineyards, this villa for rent in Italy was once the country residence of a noble family from Lecce, complete with its own chapel and rambling gardens, orchards and vineyards.  Following two years of renovation, the villa and grounds have been fully restored and reimagined as an expansive vacation retreat, that is at once inviting, comfortable, and elegant.

Dating back to the early 19th century, the entire property had been abandoned and was a stunning but challenging candidate for restoration.

The grand arched entry leads to the great room with soaring cupolas and beautiful stone construction throughout. The room is divided to include a fireside sitting area and a fully equipped kitchen and dining hall that seats fourteen and a grand terrace overlooking the estate.

All of the historical integrity has been preserved with modern design elements and amenities that skillfully integrate into the antiquity of the home. From the colorful terrazzo tiles and frescoes to the locally sourced antiques, old and new are perfectly calibrated. There are a total of six en-suite bedrooms that can accommodate up to 12 guests.

The grounds are designed for seclusion and escape, with a formal garden and viewing terraces, a hammock area, pergolas, an infinity pool, outdoor dining and living areas, an abundant vegetable garden and orchards.

A remarkable find, this property is a stunning example of elegant history reimagined for today.

The Guestbook

See what our community is saying about Tenuta dell’Alto.

Wow! Just wow. The pictures are obviously beautiful although this house really is even more impressive in person. From the moment you drive down the private, tree-lined lane you see this magnificent home perched on a hill. We stayed for 8 nights over the Christmas and New Years holiday and lucked out with beautiful sunny weather for most our trip. We were even able to use the outdoor spaces quite often, which we did not expect. The layout of the house is lovely with a huge entry room leading into the large dining area with tall glass doors looking out to the countryside. From there you move into the kitchen that is fully stocked. We prepared many meals at the house. We only had 6 people staying so just used 3 bedrooms, but all the rooms are lovely and spaced out to give privacy. Beds were very cozy and the linens and towels were top notch! Great sound system with indoor/outdoor speakers. Patrizio and his team were beyond gracious and accommodating! Fast, thoughtful communication and helped make our trip extra special. Definitely have Semira (cook/housekeeper) prepare you a home cooked meal! And the wine cellar! Stocked with local wine (for purchase...very reasonable) and fresh pressed olive olive from the grounds. The outside grounds are immaculately kept up and looked beautiful even in winter. The location is super private with hardly any other houses within sight, just endless fields of olive groves. Although you’re only 5 minutes from the local village of Squinzano. We’re dreaming of returning to this magical oasis!
