Architect Kazanski Keilhacker Molds a Butterfly Shaped Home to La Palma's Island Terrain
We love this home's distinctive butterfly silhouette and vintage Bauhaus-inspired design. Divided into two separate units, the villa can accommodate six guests on two floors. Choose one or both, and the entire space is yours exclusively. A unique conceptual response to the island landscape, this holiday rental in Spain skillfully pairs the contemporary and natural worlds.
Situated in an idyllic and secluded location along the west coast of La Palma island, the home is perched gracefully along the steep terrain overlooking spectacular views of the Atlantic and broad stretches of the island landscapes.
Designed by award-winning Berlin-based architects Kazanski Keilhacker Urban Design Architektur, the structure resembles a three-dimensional sculpture, its diamond-shaped roof modeled on the wings of a butterfly. Respectful and responsive to the natural topography and unique qualities of the site, the home's design attributes correspond to the island's changing climate and weather elements.
Layered over two floors connected by an external staircase, the home is furnished throughout with prestigious pieces from Saarinen, Jacobsen, Lissoni, and Starck, that have both a contemporary and vintage-inspired aesthetic.
On arrival, you can choose to be greeted by a basket containing traditional almond loaf, fresh fruit and vegetables from the local organic shop and a selection of La Palma goat’s cheeses. Use the professional-grade blender to make yourself a smoothie with the island’s mouth-watering fruits − depending on the time of year, you can even get them straight from your own kitchen garden. You’ll find everything you need in the kitchen, from herbs and spices to cookery books, Siemens appliances and a large Nespresso machine with coffee pods.
Fresh fish can be ordered daily from the local fishmonger. There’s also a picnic basket to take with you on your day trips.
Treat yourself to a luxurious bath while taking in the ocean vistas as the almond wood crackles beside you in the fireplace − an unforgettable experience!
Meticulously landscaped, the expansive grounds include a dining area with a pergola and a cozy lounge pavilion adjacent to the pool with many vantage points for spectacular sunsets.
THE CANARY ISLAND'S BIOSPHERE
Declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, La Palma is the greenest of the Canary Island chain off northwestern Africa, with an intoxicating mix of rugged terrain that includes both lush rainforests in the north and arid deserts in the south as well as the volcanic formations of Teneguía, Cumbre Vieja and Taburiente National Park.
The house is within a five minute drive of the picturesque 16th-century town of Puntagorda along the western coast as well as the Montaña des Matos hills that criss-cross the interior where the famed dragon trees dot the hillsides.
The spectacular coastline and black sand beaches of Tazacorte are within a thirty-minute drive with boat tours and whale watching departing from neighboring Puerto de Tazacorte.
