Thirty minutes inland from the coast, Carmões is a rural and agricultural village known for its lovely Quintas and Casais.
A vacation destination for royalty in the past, the town is rich in traditions that have been preserved by its inhabitants and the grandeur of some buildings are a big part of Portuguese architectural heritage.
Part of the Route of the Quintas and the Wine and Vineyard Route, there are numerous wineries and wine-producing estates for tastings and excellent local markets and food festivals during the spring and summer.
The small town of Torres Vedras lies twenty minutes west and is worth a stop if you're heading to the coast. With its jumble of cobbled stone streets and imposing 13th-century castle, it's an atmospheric and historic spot worth exploring.
Some of the best western beaches are a 30-minute drive including Praia das Amoeiras, Praia Azul and Praia Santa Cruz. Lisbon is a 40-minute drive.
