Croatia is known for its islands. In fact, it has over a thousand of them. For years, Vis, the farthest away from the shoreline, served as a military base, meaning that when it opened to the public again in 1989, it was unpopulated and underdeveloped. This, of course, made it enormously appealing to tourists, and when the cast and crew of Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again rolled into town in 2017, visits to the island really took off.

THE ISLAND OF VIS
This small island off the coast of Croatia in the Adriatic Sea is about 35 miles from the mainland, and best reached by ferry from Split. Known for its relative seclusion over the years, it still has a small population of around 5,000. It boasts a thriving fishing industry and its own special white grape, the Vugava, which is said to be the ancestor of the Viognier.
When you're not dining on fresh seafood and sipping the local wine, must-sees include the towns of Vis and Komiza, Stiniva cove, the Blue Cave on the nearby island of Biševo, and Hum, the mountain that dominates the western side of the island.
