An Unexpected Gem in the Valle d'Itria
Designed by edgy Milan-based architect Luca Bombassei, this converted trullo among the olive groves of Carovigno is a visual feast. A little poetic, a little tongue-in-cheek, it blends the elegance of the historic home with the playfulness of a modern artist, and it's brought to you with the skill of an architect.
It's a highly creative space made up of independent units connected by wrought iron walkways. First, there's the trullo itself, which has been whitewashed into an almost igloo-like form. Inside, between its stone floor and domed ceiling sit a cluster of cactus-inspired poufs and a trompe l’oeil shelf by Skitsch by Hub Design, with a blue-sky lampshade suspended overhead. Next up is the annex which sits next to the pool and houses an en-suite bedroom with glass shower. Then there are two further one-bedroom units. Black walls with waxed cement floors, luminous photographs by the likes of Slim Aarons and carefully chosen contemporary furnishings create an imposing, gallery-like atmosphere.
Exteriors are just as intriguing, with a centuries-old olive tree providing shelter in the courtyard, giant blackbird murals and a nest sitting daintily on the rooftop, vivid blue hammocks suspended between trees, modern sculptures on the terrace, and the dazzling turquoise pool surrounded in stone.
This villa for rent in Italy has three en-suite bedrooms, a kitchen overlooking the dining veranda, and large outdoor spaces. It sleeps six guests in independent units, making it ideal for friends sharing or a family wanting a little room to stretch out.

AROUND
The house is located in the Valle d'Itria, close to the white city of Ostuni and a few miles from the clear waters of the Adriatic coast and the Torre Guaceto nature reserve. Within 30 minutes' drive, you can visit the ancient villages of Cisternino, Locorotondo, and Alberobello, or the famous ports of Polignano a Mare and Monopoli.
The port town of Brindisi (and final stop along the famed Appian Way) lies 20 minutes southeast while the stunning Baroque city of Lecce, known as the Florence of the South, is within 30 minutes. The lovely UNESCO port town of Otranto and the Ionian seaside town of Gallipoli are worth a day-trip drive.
Come for the amazing summer food festival in Carovigno at the end of July where the very best of the region is on offer, the Ceglie Messapica food fest in August, and the d’Ostuni la blanche market on Saturdays. From Michelin-starred restaurants to simple cafes and shops, the area is a foodie mecca.
