Historically an important trading center, Roman settlement, and fortified medieval ducal seat, the town is known for its charming pedestrian center. The central Place aux Herbes features dozens of ancient, vaulted arcades lined today with shops, cafes, and terrace restaurants, and Uzès' castle dates from the 12th century. The UNESCO protected Pont du Gard is a 20-minute drive from Uzès, and the massive aqueduct is set over a pretty meandering river.
