The Hungry Horse Dam and Flathead Lake are nearby, the latter offering over 200 square miles of water surrounded by vertiginous ponderosa pines and slighter juniper trees. Trout fishing is the lake’s main draw, but it’s equally well-loved as a kayakers’ and swimmers’ dreamscape—a lake of remarkably pristine waters. Bison herds occupy the grasslands to the east of the lake, mountains encircle the water, and bear—black bear and grizzlies, or browns—join deer, elk, and smaller wildlife in the area.
The awe-inspiring Glacier National Park, approximately 30 minutes away, offers over a million rugged acres of public land that would take years to explore fully. Park highlights include Going-to-the-Sun Road that passes St. Mary Lake with its Wild Goose Island. Boat tours offer a stunningly different perspective than driving. Hikers can summit the Huckleberry Lookout—a different kind of challenging trail in the park--after an exposed, five-mile climb. The Lookout is a wildfire watchtower with resident firefighters. Or, visit Wild Horse Island, Flathead Lake’s largest landmass home to bighorn sheep, mule deer, bald eagles, majestic water fowl—and yes, wild horses, mostly mustangs.
