AROUND
Olive and fruit groves blanket the island’s inland, and white pebbled beaches offset vivid turquoise waters on Zakynthos, a favorite Greek getaway in the southern Ionian Sea, dubbed “the Flower of the Levante” by the Venetians. The island appeared in Homer’s epic poems The Iliad and The Odyssey, and the isle is interchangeably referred to in Greek (Zakynthos) and Italian (Zante). White beaches, sea turtles, and a happening nightlife scene are what the island is best known for, as well as its landmark shipwreck on Navagio (Shipwreck Beach), where the beached boat joins the white cliff-backed sands.
Beaches are the island’s main draw, and the choices are many—Laganas, Vasilikos, Marathonisi and Tsilivi Gerakas, all considered to be among the country’s most beautiful. Divers, swimmers, and even sailors (who drop anchor here, sometimes overnight) can’t get enough of the isle’s Blue Caves. One of the best ways to discover these arching mazes is in a sea kayak or canoe. The Ionian Sea around Zante is also home to a marine park where rare caretta caretta sea turtles lay their eggs.
Inland pursuits include visiting the hundreds of acres of vineyards where more than 60 grape varieties are tended and transformed into wines. The traditional village of Akrotiri offers a hilltop panorama nearby, plus it’s home to the gorgeous Tsilvi beach. Those seeking nightlife should head to the island’s southern side, where Laganas, land of beach clubs, pool parties, and discos, famously hosts the 20- and 30-something set.
