A starkly beautiful main building, spacious modern annex, and an intimate ancient lamia with a restored barrel vault make up this solar-powered, thermally efficient country estate. Offering a fresh take on local tradition, the villa was designed by architect Luca Abbadati of Quarzo Studio, a Milan firm dedicated to sustainability, who collaborated with his fashion industry spouse Sara to create an estate that stands as a subtle play on light, shadow, and serenity.

Sleep spaces occupy separate structures, converging around a pool and outdoor kitchen beyond the main building’s living/dining/kitchen area. Interiors are bathed in a look that is pure and subtle—a quiet palette of soft matte variations on beige, sand, stone and chalk.

A great base for exploring Puglia, Italy’s new “it” region dotted with UNESCO-classified villages like bright, white Ostuni and the trulli home capital of Alberobello, Casanguilla is a true country estate, set equidistant between the villages of San Michele Salentino (6km) and San Vito dei Normanni (7km). The nearest beach area is the protected marine park of Torre Guaceto Nature Reserve, with its Spiaggia Torre Guaceto beach and the nearby sands of Torre Pozzelle and Punta Penna Grossa.

An idyllic inland landscape of olive groves and agricultural fields surrounds the property, that is also easily accessible to the fertile Valle d’Itria, with its photogenic villages such as Cisternino (30km), Martina Franca (33km) and Ceglie Messapica (18km). The greater region of Puglia fills Italy’s boot heel and is known for its wealth of cultural and gastronomical offerings. Wine and olive oil producers are among the country’s best, the university town of Lecce is referred to as the “Florence of the South” for its Baroque architecture and wealth of art, and Mediterranean port towns range from the busy regional capital of Bari to the picturesque Polignano a Mare.
