This villa for rent in Puerto Rico is located on a hillside at the southern edge of El Yunque National Forest that covers a large part of the northeastern section of the island. The 29,000 acre park is one of Puerto Rico’s most celebrated places, and is the only tropical rainforest in the US Forest System. Home to a dizzying array of unique plant and animal species, including the island’s famed coqui frog, the park is crisscrossed by walkway and footpaths that wind through El Yunque’s dense forest, with trails leading to waterfalls, up lush green summits of the Sierra de Luqillo range and past ancient petroglyphs. The southern portion of El Yunque Park is anchored by the centuries-old beach town of Naguabo. Founded by the Spanish in the 16th century, the town is set at the confluence of six rivers and, in addition to its Caribbean coastline, offers rock waterslides, crashing cascades and exquisite natural pools. The town’s waterfront promenade, the Malécon de la Playa Hucares, is the home beach of local fishermen who bring in lobster, conch, and capitán, served fresh at the dozens of eateries and kiosks along the beach. There’s a castle ruin at one end of the malécon, a National Register site that was once the home of a sugar baron who built it in the early 20th century.
