Architect Jeffrey Eyster Reimagines The Classic California Architecture Of Donald Perry Polsky
An inspired restoration of an early architectural gem like this one is rare and we love that the original house is still visible and part of the story. The towering post and beam gallery, the contemporary and vintage furnishings, and the amazing art collection make this a gem of LA mid-century style.
Architect Jeffrey Eyster Reimagines The Classic California Architecture Of Donald Perry Polsky
Transported from its mid-century roots and translated into a modern light-filled home, architect Jeffrey Eyster has re-imagined the classic early California architecture of Donald Perry Polsky and delivered a stunning update.
The restoration integrates dramatically and effortlessly into the bones and form of the original structure while creating a distinctive character all its own. A faithful expansion and extension on the mid-century modernist ideal, Allenwood House escapes the wholesale elimination of the architectural history of its origins and becomes an homage instead.
Minimalist in tone and execution it nevertheless makes maximum impact. The main entrance has been transformed into a soaring vaulted gallery with a central strip of skylights providing a dramatic gateway into the main living room.
With dark, softly polished concrete and bamboo floors, windows instead of walls, and whitewashed interiors, the effect is cool and refined. The dominant use of white and economical use of decor showcases an art collection that blends beautifully with the new gallery-like structure without being stark. The monolithic Bazalt water feature and indoor bamboo gardens are earthy installations that further lend this home its unique contemporary character.
Sleek and modern, the open plan is nevertheless warm and inviting and includes an interior courtyard that divides the main house and guest studio. The master bedroom includes an en suite bath that has it's own dressing area as well as an adjacent office and library. The large, private guest quarters sleep two and includes it's own bath.
The newly updated state of the art chef's kitchen is fully equipped with the finest appliances and accommodates dining for six. The original fireplace has been updated combining early brick and a new polished platform, creating a warm focal point in the room that's perfect for entertaining.
Surrounded by floor to ceiling windows and light, the home invites the outside in, creating a wall of complete 360 degree privacy and a relaxing poolside oasis.
Increasing its space and scope while staying true to it's architectural history, has afforded this home a renaissance that is elegant and timeless.
