Designer Loft
Radiant and remarkable for its inventive approach to tiny-house living, this vertical loft places an emphasis on illumination—vivid white, filled with light, with a standout twisting staircase to access its mezzanine sleep space, and a sunny, built-in window seat as sofa. Only minutes from Miami Beach, in the hip, glitzy Design District, the bright atelier opens into a shared, tended tropical garden.
Creatively utilizing every space inside this airy, tiny-house-turned-tropical loft, this designer studio stands out as a far bigger, brighter presence than its wee, 400-square-foot floorplan. A vivid display of the maxim “good things come in small packages,” it’s a Japanese-inspired, Venezuelan-American-designed tropical outpost illuminated by double height interiors, big windows and generous skylights. A petite bedroom is reached by a sinuous floating staircase, and the keyboard-influenced interior is sparkling white, jazzed up with ebony contrasts. The backyard garden is a community space, shared with the neighboring rental by the same owners.
AROUND
Miami’s Design District is an 18-block area known for its contemporary architecture, upscale interior design and fashion boutiques, plus trendsetting restaurants in an oasis of public art, including the Fly’s Eye Dome by inventor Buckminster Fuller, the DASH Fence by designer Marc Newson, a formidable fiberglass likeness of architect Le Corbusier by French artist Xavier Veilhan, and a giant plaster sculpture, the Myth Fortuna, a replica of supermodel Kate Moss doing yoga. Luxury shoppers and window shoppers will find boutiques from Gucci, Celine, Louis Vuitton, Givenchy, Hermes… and the list goes on. A gastronome’s wonderland, the district is home to Mia Market, an international, gourmet food hall, and restaurants and cafes from the low brow to the five-starred.
Museums and galleries in the Design District include the ultra-modern Institute of Contemporary Art, showing emerging artists alongside Picasso and Lichtenstein. There is also the De La Cruz Collection, showing the dazzling private collection of Carlos and Rosa De La Cruz, and The Haitian Heritage Museum, the sole US museum dedicated to promoting Haiti’s heritage and culture. The neighborhood is easily accessible to Miami Beach, and stretches north of Midtown and I-95. Developed from a few warehouses into a dazzling artistic hub, the district holds the annual Art Basel Miami Beach show.
