The central region of Mallorca is only about 30 minutes from the island’s better known coasts, and this inland area offers easy access to the isle’s “backbone” mountain range, the UNESCO World Heritage designated Tramuntana range. A nirvana for hikers and rock climbers, the Tramuntana are wild and jagged, the peaks embracing two mountain lakes, isolated villages, and remnants of ancient stone terraces and walls. Road cyclists train on the island’s network of steep inland roads, but it’s only on foot that some of the mountains’ treasures can be experienced. For example, the dramatic Torrent de Pareis cascade crashes deep within a sheer, rocky valley, and the Ruta de Pedra Sec offers a scenic pedestrian-only network of trails extending between Andratx and Pollença, with refuges for rest along the way.
