Forest Bathing From a Modern Mexican Cabin
This leggy cabin in Mexico stands tall among the trees in the Sierra de Lobos National Park, resting at the treeline with spectacular views of the valley through the oak forest.
Designed and built by architect Alejandro Molano, a design and style enthusiast, it's perched and cantilevered out over five meters above the ground. Washed in a deep black hue, it both blends and contrasts with the dense vegetation, offering up a more glamorous version of cabin life.
The interior's proportions are generous and its palette is a stylish composition in concrete, steel framing, and wood with double-height ceilings. The ground floor includes the living room, a dining area, and a fully equipped kitchen with glass doors that open out to the terrace overlooking the views. Fun, pop-art-inspired color blocking and some irreverent decor mixes with earthy and contemporary sophistication and style.
Upstairs, each of the three bedrooms are in homage to a different artist. The Dalí and The Warhol with en suite bathrooms and private balconies offer up surrealist and iconographic touches with spectacular views while The Van Gogh includes a private balcony and warmer classical tones.
The raised terrace includes a barbecue, a sunken stone fire pit for twelve people, and hammocks for lazy siestas and a little forest bathing.
Surrounded by ancient oak forest, there are trails to wander right from the house and a nearby children's play area, a horse stable, and a lake.
GUANAJUATO'S SIERRA DE LOBOS
Thirty minutes north from León, the Sierra de Lobos are divided straight down the middle between Jalisco and Guanajuato.
A protected zone of sustainably preserved oak and pine forests, rivers and arid savannahs, the parklands are home to over one hundred species of flora and fauna native to the area as well as the striking Los Panales rock formations.
Crisscrossed with trails and hiking routes, the area offers great trekking and mountain biking. Located in the Bajío region on the Central Mexican Plateau, the area is known for its temperate climate and thriving agriculture.
A city dedicated to industry as well as its cultural traditions, León bustles with a modern energy as well as colonial history, gastronomy, and its long-standing expertise in leather craftsmanship (check out the Zona Piel for some handcrafted shoes and leather goods). It's mainly a stop-over hub for connecting with the rest of central Mexico.
