Urban Sophistication in Rural Mallorca
Located on the outskirts of an inland island village on one of Mallorca’s famed road cycling routes, this updated rural family home feels worlds away from its country location. Thoroughly updated, its exposed blonde sandstone and cool minimalist interior décor palette feels decidedly urban and sophisticated, yet the property is still filled with simple country breezes and rural charm.
One in a portfolio of family-run village homes, this villa for rent in Mallorca is the sister property to Can Cunso 18, Can Cunso 30, and the former great-grandparents’ estate, Casa Padrins. As serene as its remodeled siblings, the home is an oasis of natural colors and materials, with a look that tends toward the cool, modern, and Scandi-chic. There’s an enclosed garden and landscaped lap pool, alfresco dining, a galley kitchen and open-plan dining area, wide picture windows that open to the island sunshine and let in soft country breezes, plus clean-lined, easygoing furnishings. The atmosphere is elegant and understated, a surprisingly modern country home in a privileged, under-the-radar location that invites easy rest and gentle relaxation.
AROUND
Peace and quiet tops the list of things that Mallorca’s rugged interior offers visitors. This villa for rent in Mallorca is one of four owned and operated by the same family in Consell, a 19th-century rural community they’ve called home for generations. Relax poolside after a morning exploring markets in Santa Maria del Camí or Sineu. Walk into the heart of town (five minutes) to visit shops, restaurants and small local bars, or visit the workshops of local craftsmen. Consell hosts an island-famous flea market each Sunday morning, featuring some 300 stalls overflowing with antiques, curiosities, collectibles and furniture.
Take a 10-minute drive to discover Alaró’s ancient architecture, castle, and cobbled streets, and be sure to browse the town’s shoe selection. Alaró was once home to dozens of cobblers and shoe factories, and prominent bootmaker Tony Mora still works from the village and has a warehouse there.
This is wine country, and the Mallorca Wine Tours Train passes on Consell’s outskirts, offering organized winery tours and tastings. Or visit the area’s vineyards independently. The nearby village of Binissalem produces a highly regarded red wine from the local Manto Negro grape, and is also a quarry town where stonemasons (and woodworkers) work in rugged ateliers.
Mallorca’s interior is perhaps best known for its Serra de Tramuntana, a rugged mountain range that forms the island’s backbone and is a classified UNESCO World Heritage Site. Besides being a popular base for hikers, climbers, and day trippers, the mountain range has become a destination for both amateur and professional cyclists. Featuring steep, winding routes, biking in the area is known to be challenging, even considered some of the best road cycling routes in Europe.
