Secluded Love Nest with a Beach to Call Your Own
This traditional village home’s upbeat renovation transforms a modest rural structure into a sunny surf shack for two. Immaculately whitewashed, with custom-crafted wood furnishings and natural textiles, the cozy home’s three levels are connected by a narrow stone staircase, with outdoor access both upstairs and down.
Fully rebuilt by its interior architect-owner, this vacation home for rent in Portugal is a 10-minute drive from wild, unspoiled beaches and vast coastal parkland. A traditional village home, the intimate getaway offers the timeless charms of Portuguese village life with a modern surf shack vibe. Inside the brightly whitewashed structure, a narrow shale stairway leads upstairs, whitewashed wicker covers the ceilings, and the reformulated décor is simple, with vintage flea market finds and colorful pops from natural textiles. Life moves slowly here. A mobile fishmonger and traveling baker pass each morning, and the house has a fully equipped kitchen to prepare the local provisions, with a streetfront patio for enjoying them
AROUND
This is a little known section of the busy Algarve, a dramatic, out-of-the-way rural region set a 10-minute drive from the windswept sandy beaches and rolling surf of the Costa Vicentina. Located just outside the village of Bordeira, the home is near Vicentine Coast Nature Park, one of Europe’s few coastal parks stretching across 150 kilometers of cliff-backed, golden sand coastline between the southwestern Alentejo (Port Covo) and the northern part of the Algarve (Burgau). One of Portugal’s wildest areas, the park offers under-the-radar small towns, lost-in-time hamlets, and rich biodiversity and wildlife. Beaches here are mostly deserted—curving swaths of golden sand blown into undulating dunes. Protected coves along the jagged coast have been created by a series of small streams that empty into the Atlantic, and the natural park’s focus is the Sagres Peninsula, a rugged headland marked by limestone cliffs and outcroppings that was known as the “end of Europe” for millennia and served as the launch point for Prince Henry the Navigator’s many expeditions.
The beach closest to this vacation home for rent in Portugal is the town’s namesake beach, about five kilometers away, and Carrapateira, a favorite surfing beach is only a bit further (about seven kilometers from the home), with a small bar on the sand in front of the rugged cliffs. A supermarket and handful of small, local cafes and restaurants are located in the larger nearby village of Aljezur, known for its medieval fortress and cobbled streets divided by a river, and popular Sagres and Lagos are each about 30 kilometers from the home.
