Black Sand Beaches Visited by Sea Turtles
This villa for rent in Guatemala sits like a cluster of oversized palapas on the Pacific coast, and makes a great hideaway for a large group of friends and family. It sleeps up to 19 guests in an unexpected configuration of rooms, and is located close to one of the country's most popular beach resorts, which also happens to be a sea turtle sanctuary.
This elegant home is located near the low-key and laid-back beach town of Monterrico. It's a light-filled space with a sandy, castaway vibe, centered around a vast swimming pool. We love the palapa roof that hovers over the kitchen, dining & living room, and mezzanine chill-out room. Interiors are white-walled and decorated in wood, rattan and basketwork, with large windows looking out across the garden to the ocean.
The four bedrooms are a delightful surprise, as each has the capacity to house one small family in a main bed and cluster of bunks. One room has a king bed and two twins, two have a king bed and four twins, and a final room has a king bed and one twin. Each has its own private bathroom with fun patterned tiling, as well as air conditioning, and access to private terraces. A great villa for rent in Guatemala for large groups.
AROUND
Monterrico is famous for its black sand beaches, mangrove swamp and sea turtle conservation, plus the region is known as the billfish capital of the world. The villa is located between the ocean and the Chiquimulilla channel, the man-made canal that stretches along the Pacific coastline, lined with mangrove wetlands and a nature reserve. It's a lazy, laid-back kind of place, so bring a book and chill on the beach.
Alternatively, sign up for a catch-and-release fishing tour, just 40 minutes by car fom the house. Take a tour of the mangroves, watch giant leatherback, green sea and Olive Ridley turtles come ashore to lay their eggs (between June and December), or pay a visit to the turtle hatchery. You can even pay to release your own turtle back into the ocean (the money goes to conservation).
LOCATION
Monterrico, Guatemala. Nearest airport: La Aurora (Guatemala City), 75km.
BEST TIME TO VISIT: June to December for sea turtles, November through April for billfish, year round for good weather.
