Inspired by Geometry
Planes and angles converge at the geometric, architectural Casa Esteval, a vivid white home in the Algarve, from our friends at StudioArte. Here, sundrenched, rectangular windows are punched artfully across the unique multi-plane structure, and the geometric theme continues inside, where three bedrooms located beyond triangular accent walls are furnished with eye-catching geometry-inspired forms transformed into functional bars, chaises, and chairs.
Casa Esteval pops out of the southern landscape in a rural valley, outside a remote village named in part for the Moors who once claimed the place, in a region most notable for its rocky outcroppings. The newly constructed property boasts a lovely dry garden and saltwater swimming pool shared by its three bed-and-bath suites, and also features a 400-tree citrus orchard stretching beyond the pool.
The adults-only property was created for relaxation. Bedroom suites are comfortable and intimate, with king-sized beds and rain showers. Two of the rooms also feature private terraces with views of the landscaped rock garden and pool. The saltwater swimming pool is surrounded by cacti, olive trees, and other tropical shrubbery planted within terraced rock walls. Perhaps most notable outdoors are the geometric forms turned pool loungers, with their funky, geometric sun shades that mimic the property’s unique angular construction.
Located in a wild, relatively remote section of the Algarve, the house offers visits to local markets, wineries and olive oil producers. Alternatively, guests can choose sportier activities such as jeep safaris in the rugged hills, golfing, hiking the area's marked footpaths, or driving to nearby beaches less than a half hour away.
The Fig Room has an ensuite bathroom with rain shower, a private terrace with great view, and a minibar. The Olive Room has an ensuite bathroom with rain shower, a private terrace with great views, a minibar and a workspace. The Lemon Room has an ensuite bathroom with rain shower, plus a king-sized bed, minibar and workspace.
AROUND
Located inland from the Algarve’s popular coast, Casa Esteval is named for its village, Esteval dos Mouros, a small valley hamlet once occupied by the Moors. The area is rugged and rocky, with the notable Rocha da Pena just north of the village, and the Moorish castle ruins of the nearby village of Paderne also nearby. Orange, olive and almond groves are prominent in the rocky landscape, and abandoned hamlets can be found around twisting roads and marked footpaths of the area.
One notable village nearby is Alte, once dubbed “the most Portuguese village in Portugal” for its whitewashed buildings and tight, cobblestoned streets. The area is rural and picturesque, with sweeping views of the hills and countryside as the property’s backdrop. Further afield, popular beaches and coastal enclaves are available a quick drive away.
