Beach Bungalows in Oaxaca

A beach bungalow compound on Oaxaca’s Pacific coastline, steps from the water and 15 kilometers from Puerto Escondido, this secluded tropical retreat takes the hideaway allure of its oceanfront location to sustainable new levels.

Each of the property’s five bungalows was built of natural materials such as adobe and sustainably harvested woods, topped by palapa roofs. The cabanas feature natural ventilation and solar-heated water, private interior gardens lush with drought-resistant plants and spacious terraces. Communal areas include a traditional Pacific-basin-styled palm leaf palapa at its heart, a 20m infinity pool facing the ocean, a wide swath of lawn, an air-conditioned Peace Room for reading and relaxation, as well as a workspace to encourage entrepreneurial remote work.

The Kitchen at Casa I focuses on Oaxacan cuisine with Mediterranean and South Asian additions. Outdoor areas include palm groves and fruit trees, lookout points, arbors and oases. There are outdoor showers and sun lounging palapas, and a traditional braided palm beach structure for lounging shaded on the sand.

With its on-site wellness and relaxation offerings, the property is a destination in its own right, plus it makes a great base for exploring this section of the Pacific coastline. Dolphin and whale watching, watching baby turtles hatch on area beaches, fishing, sky diving and surfing are all on offer in the area. Between the waterfront and the inland Sierras, there are miles of indigenous tropical forests rich with wildlife. A few kilometers south of the property, secluded between the mountains and bays are Ventanilla and Zipolite beaches. Zicateca and La Punta beaches are the closest sands, and other beaches include Bacocho, Carizalillo, and Principal. The Manialtepec Lagoon is famed for its bioluminescence, and the Chacahua lagoon is a great spot for kayaking or boat touring to discover its wildlife-rich waterways. World-class surfing can be had at Zicatela Beach in Puerto Escondido, with its powerful Mexican Pipeline Surf Break. Beginners and longboarders gather at the more mellow La Punta, where guides and instruction are available.

The town of Mazunte is home to a spiritually centered community of hippies, seekers, and healers of many modalities and also the site of the Mexican Turtle Center. The Punta Cometa peninsula is lined with mangroves and home to rich birdlife and hungry crocs. Culture lovers will want to head to Casa Wabi, the art residency (and fellow Boutique property) designed by Tado Andao, and of course Puerto Escondido offers an eclectic dining and nightlife scene, unspoiled reefs for snorkeling and diving, and plenty of water sports from SUPs to kayaking.
