From its spectacular glass-bottom rooftop pool with panoramic views across the city, to the fireside hammock and indoor cactus gardens, this vacation home rental in San Miguel de Allende turns tradition and customs on its head.

Blending contemporary and traditional rustic design elements, eye-catching detail, and unexpected thought-provoking features, it's a peaceful inner sanctum that puts you high above the city at an enviable vantage point.

Constructed using volcanic stone, concrete and recycled ‘Trojes’ hardwood and mesquite from Michoacán, the home's modern features are tempered with earthy details that bring it back to the elemental.

Like being inside a wooden palapa house on the ocean, the indoor and outdoor living areas are designed to complement your mood, with rays of light flickering through the interiors with almost surreal images of bodies passing through the crystal clear waters above.

Located within easy distance of the historic center, it's a destination in itself, and an unforgettable setting for getting to know this historic town in sublime comfort and style.

Centrally located but tucked away at the top of a quiet pedestrian alley just below the city's main lookout point, the home is a one-of-a-kind fusion of contemporary and rustic colonial style.

Accessed from the ground floor via a commanding 19th-century teak door imported from Rajasthan, India, the main lounge soars two stories high and is capped by the glass bottom pool on the rooftop serving as a skylight, casting soft blues throughout the house.

There's an indoor cactus garden and a calm fireside nook with a hammock here, and the adjacent kitchen is a chef's delight with top of the line appliances and a bar (stocked with Mezcal and drinks!).

The master suite opens up to the main living room area and comes equipped with a fireplace and en suite bath. It can be opened out to expand the living spaces or closed off with curtains for sleep.

The upper floor mezzanine is a gallery-like space with windows that overlook the spaces below and includes a TV room with a custom L-shaped sofa, and an office with a desk and a Balinese day bed that can accommodate an extra adult or two children.

The house’s rooftop terrace captures sweeping panoramic sunset views, including sight of the town’s most famous landmark - the Parroquia de San Miguel. The heated glass bottom swimming pool illuminates the interiors below with rippling blue hues, while the black marble firepit with wrap-around seating is the place to gather, with an outdoor kitchen and grill for sunset dining.

Within walking distance of all the town's attractions and its surrounding landmarks, this is a privileged spot in a fascinating city.

    SAN MIGUEL ALLENDE

Located in the far eastern part of Guanajuato, central Mexico, San Miguel de Allende is one of those towns that visitors fall in love with. A haven for artists and writers since the late 1930s, it took on a Bohemian, counterculture quality in the 1960s.

Part of the appeal is that the town's historic center remains much the same as it was 250 years ago, with no traffic signals and fast-food restaurants - making it a wonderful escape from the hustle and bustle of the modern world. Known for its baroque and neoclassical colonial architecture, as well as its thriving arts scene, it is beloved for its beautiful historic center and the nearby Sanctuary of Atotonilco, both of which were declared World Heritage Sites in 2008. Located right above The Rosewood Hotel, and Parque Jarez, these are two main attractions that should be on your 'to do list'.

The house is within easy walking distance of the historic center, where there are cooking, art and language classes, resutaurants, movie theaters, and music venues. Wear comfortable walking shoes, or catch taxis for 35-40 pesos. Additional nearby attractions include Mayan and Aztec pyramids, horse ranches, hot springs, and other historic towns and villages.
