A Nakagyo Ward Original with A Modern Minimal Makeover

With its four sleep spaces, quiet garden, elevated yoga/meditation deck, plus six bicycles for exploring Kyoto’s buzzing streets, this Nakagyo ward retreat offers a great base for exploring Kyoto.

The first-floor primary bedroom has an en suite bathroom, plus the floor holds a guest WC/powder room and kitchen that opens into a bright lounge area outfitted with sliding doors to the back garden. Above the garden, a large wooden expanse is ready for yogis and meditation practitioners.

Upstairs, the home features a second en suite bedroom and a children’s room with a lofted adjoining bedroom and a shared bathroom. All bedrooms feature traditional futon beds and classic Japanese fixtures such as shoji screens and exposed wood trusses.

Additional information

The loft spaces are accessed via a traditional modular Japanese ladder that must be hooked on both sides of its frame and sit flush with the floor on both sides. Eight bikes are available for guest use, and fitted with wheel locks and keys.

Coffee shops, ramen restaurants and teahouses, and historical landmarks define the vibrant neighborhood, beautifully balancing urban living with a tranquil, residential vibe. Historical streets surround Nishiki Market, and on Sundays a lively flea market comes alive with street food vendors, antique dealers and local artisans. The Kamogawa River runs nearby, offering changing seasons on full display in the colorful cherry blossom bloom or fiery autumn foliage. The UNESCO World Heritage site of Nijo Castle is a Nakagyo Ward landmark, and dozens of traditional machiya townhouses add to the architectural significance of the neighborhood. The neighborhood boasts many modern boutiques and cafes, giving the ward a unique blend of past and present.
