The farm table in the kitchen is joined by a prep island/bar with stools, and original architectural details pop out of the clean white walls as exposed stones and arcing brick.

Surrounded by cultivated fields, with mountains on the horizon, this updated country house offers an easy, slow-living base with the beauty of the natural world all around. The coastline is only a few kilometers away, with the beaches of Empuries at speedy three kilometers from the property, and the cities of Cadaques and Girona within easy reach, too. The Costa Brava’s showplaces—Callella, Aiguablava, Pals, Emporda Peratallada and La Bisbal—are beloved destinations, and in summertime, the festival of Castell de Peralada and Cap Roig are gathering places for international creatives.

The ancient Greek ruins at Emporium are nearby and the Mediterranean region is dotted with DOC vineyards and pine forests between its Mediterranean coves. The landscape here is known locally as the Montgrí, getting its name from the mountain range in the backdrop and the natural park that rises from the north bank of the Ter River. Hikers, bikers and car tourists shouldn’t miss the region’s beautiful interior, and there’s a fortified castle dating from 1294 on top of a dramatic outcropping that makes for a great day trip.

The region’s famed rocky slopes continue all the way down to the Mediterranean Sea, where in many cases, boats are the only means to access the rugged inlets the rocks create. Snorkelers can explore underwater caves, and sailors will find outfitters and captained tours in local fishing villages and picturesque ports. The more open part of the coast here is a favorite wind- and kite-surfing locale, and wakeboarders and sea kayakers launch from here as well.
