Architectural Outpost on Oaxaca's Jungle Coast
This trio of vaulted residences by Ambrosi Etchegaray Architects appears like a classic temple rising from a dense jungle clearing. Set only 300 feet from the sea, the three celebrated structures hold two bedrooms, three open courtyards and a semi-enclosed kitchen, living and dining area separated by the artful stroke of a central swimming pool reflecting the residence’s geometric columns.
Architectural Outpost in Oaxacan Mangrove
A spacious indoor-outdoor retreat only 300 feet from the lush Oaxacan coastline, this multi-structure residence has been hailed in Architectural Digest, Arch Daily, designBoom, and Amazing Architecture. The residence features two queen bedrooms in buildings of their own, with toddler (or day) beds tucked in at the foot of each bed, ensuite baths, and patios and pathways connecting to the long, lean swimming pool at its heart. A third building constructed in the same, rolled-top brick style, holds the common areas.
Constructed of bricks from its famed artist residence and clay-firing neighbor, Casa Wabi, the property’s earthen vaults are enclosed by reed lattice work, allowing for ventilation and beauty, and all the concrete structural elements are finished with clay pigments bringing a terracotta warmth to the brick- and clay-floored, wood-partitioned outposts.
Around
This property is located a one-minute walk to the beach and a five-minute walk to the serene gem of Punta Pájaros, a town deep in the Oaxacan coastal mangroves that showcases an unusual number of stunning architectural masterworks. The community of Punta Pájaros is clustered around a single lane dirt road, with outdoor cafes, yoga and wellness studios, and breezy boutiques near miles of beach, close to the surf capital of Puerto Escondido. The home is walking distance to Cobarde, a you-know-if-you-know, mezcal-focused beach bar and a 10-minute walk to Omakase Restaurant, the reserve-in-advance, architectural and culinary palapa. The Laguna de Manialtepec is close to the property—a great place to organize a boat trip, kayaking or paddleboard adventure at sunset. From October to March, the lagoon features bioluminescence, and just opposite the lagoon is the Chacahua National Park.
Puerto Escondido is a port town at the end of the Sierra Madre del Sur mountain range about 100 miles from the region’s inland capital city, Oaxaca. Arranged around a picturesque bay dotted with gigantic rock formations, the area is divided between Bacocho Beach on the north end, the Playa Principal resort area in the middle, and the famous surfing beach of Zicatela on the south end. Considered one of the of the world’s top 10 surfing destinations, the town is also the site of rich wildlife, mangrove forests, and turtle sanctuaries at Ventanilla.
