A Travel Experience Guided by Art
A quiet and intimate place in nature, this vacation home rental in Portugal was created as a unique art and travel experience that doubles as a private artist in residence program for part of the year.
Offering the space to create, collaborate and breathe, the house's name is an acronym for "Where About Now" that conjures up not only a geographical reference, but a metaphorical question of contemporary living and artistic expression, where travelers come to holiday and artists are encouraged to experiment and find inspiration.
During the low season, the property is made available for artists to live and work on the property and hold small events and presentations of their work when you can also rent the double rooms with private bathrooms, while the whole house is available in high season.
Perched upon a bluff overlooking verdant national parkland, the home is located near the village of Aljezur in the Algarve, surrounded by picturesque ocean and lake vistas.
A typical Portuguese home designed with the familiar charms of the Algarve, the interiors have been restored with simple modern gestures and are decorated with a stylish yet restrained selection of vintage furnishings, sustainable brands, and preloved design objects, giving the home a simple, authentically-lived-in patina.
There are three ensuite bedrooms that sleep six and a fully equipped kitchen and living spaces with a large terrace overlooking the views.
Blessed with stunning vistas and no nearby neighbors, the only sounds you'll hear nearby are those of birdsong, waves, and the gentle rustling of the countryside, making for a naturally contemplative getaway, an elemental outpost in the midst of the coastal countryside.
THE ALGARVE
There's plenty to do in the area, with excellent surfing at the nearby blue-flag beaches, hiking, cycling, mountain biking, paddle boarding, horse riding, and eating out coming highly recommended. Aljezur is a surfer’s paradise, home to some of Portugal’s best surf and most beautiful beaches. The owners also offer a helpful welcome letter with recommendations for local arts and cultural collaborations to offer a complementary focus to surfing. The nearest beaches are Monte Clerigo and Arrifana, both about 10 minutes away by car.
Praia da Amoreira was recently featured in Vogue, and also named “The Perfect Beach” by The Times newspaper. Explore local secret spots with a surf guide, paddle out at the local beach, or learn to surf with experienced coaches.
The town of Aljezur has an ancient castle as well as numerous art galleries and museums, such as the Casa-Museu of the renowned Portuguese Painter José Cercas. Ask the owners for recommended eateries and wineries.
