Birthright Beauty
An original whitewashed masseria that’s especially fitting in its location outside the UNESCO-classified “White City” of Ostuni, this updated, two-story villa soars like an island from a sea of olive and almond trees. Owned by locals who produce a limited olive oil on the property, the home reignites their lifelong love of their natal region, and creates a cool, unassuming space from which to share their Puglian passion.
Once upon a time a humble agricultural outpost, this bright, boxy structure has been transformed into an easygoing modern getaway at the hands of a couple who returned to their natal region for rest, relaxation, and sundrenched rejuvenation. An original open fireplace adjoins two vaulted living areas, both high-ceilinged spaces crossed by exposed timbers. Furnishings tend toward the contemporary and cushy mixed with funky vintage pieces. The pair of outdoor verandas are generous, and both overlook the olive grove that’s flanked by a huge, 40-meter swimming pool and landscaped terrace.
Around
Located outside of Ostuni, the home is only minutes from the heart of the Valle d’Itria’s famed magical white village. It makes a sophisticated base for exploring the region, including the crystalline waters of the Adriatic sea and its rock-studded, coved beaches, the nature reserve of Torre Guaceto, and the lively port towns of Polignano a Mare and Monopoli. Puglia is, of course, famed for its dry stacked, conical trulli homes, charming former agricultural storages that today are mostly fairtytale private getaways dotting the rural landscape. Thousands of trulli are concentrated in and around Alberobello, a UNESCO classified location that’s a quick drive from the home. Other picturesque villages of note nearby include Cisternino and Locorotondo. The nearest beach is about a half-hour’s drive away along the Adriatic Sea, while the Ionian Sea, filling the space between Italy’s boot heel and toe, is a bit further afield, but also easily accessible.
