Around
A few minutes outside the village of St. Lorenzen in the verdant Puster Valley of northern Italy’s South Tyrol, this luxury retreat makes a great base for exploring the Dolomites in all seasons. Skiers will appreciate that the refined lodge is located only five minutes from the Kronplatz Ski Area, offering 120 kilometers of slopes and 32 lifts for alpine skiers and opportunities for cross-country enthusiasts and snowshoers as well. The Alta Badia, one of the most important areas of the South Tyrol and home of region’s Ladin-speaking people, is a half hour away. Alta Badia ski resort occupies the geographic heart of the Dolomites as well as being the region’s cultural center.
Dramatic, crag-topped mountains here descend into strikingly green meadows and forests of the Gadertal Valley, and this section of South Tyrol is rich in natural parks cut with trails, including the Fanes-Sennes-Prags, the Puez-Geisler, and the Rieserferner-Ahrn parks. These protected areas offer steep hiking and mountain climbing, with trails more suitable for mountain biking and cycling at lower altitude in the lush Pustertal Valley or at the designated Kronplatz Bike Park near the castle. Picturesque villages nearby include Bruneck (12km), with its museums and dominating castle, Brixen/Bressanone (33km), an enclave that has become a favorite gastronomic destination, and the market town of Bolzano (an hour’s drive), where the region’s Italian heritage is on full display. A bit further, the resort village of Ortisei in the Val Gardena is encircled by steep mountains, offering additional recreational opportunities such as via ferrata, paragliding, and mountain biking.
