A Woodsy Sea Ranch Retreat by Architect Ralph Matheson
Newly renovated and stylishly curated to showcase mid-century modern décor, this open-concept loft cabin by architect Ralph Matheson has 25-foot ceilings and walls of glass. Its vivid living room offers coastal redwood views, with the Pacific sparkling on the horizon. The cabin’s kitchen is sleek with quartz countertops and a cerulean glass backsplash, and cooks will appreciate the Boos butcher block prep island and Senken Japanese knives. Plus there’s a romantic, freestanding wood stove to warm the common areas, and a kitchen deck for sipping morning coffee embraced by the surrounding redwoods, firs, and oaks.
The intimate sleep area is upstairs and fitted with a skylight for tree- and stargazing and complemented by a checkerboard ensuite bathroom with a walk-in shower. There’s a nook desk in a window for work and contemplation, and overflow sleep or cuddling space on a built-in full-sized daybed downstairs.
Around
The property is located on a quarter of an acre, only a 15-minute walk to Ohlsen Beach via one of Sea Ranch’s many trails. It is just under four miles to The Lodge at Sea Ranch, where guests can access the cliffside restaurant and general store, the concierge, daily events and wellness/fitness facilities, as well as curated Sea Ranch experiences. Transportation to and from The Lodge is provided.
The cabin offers easy access to the area’s most important architectural designs within the famous Sea Ranch community, including early houses by MLTW and Joseph Escherick. Developed in the 1960s, Sea Ranch is known for its distinctive timber-frame structures designed from weathered local redwood by noted American architects, and it rises organically from its rugged coastal landscape in California’s Sonoma County. Created by lead architect Al Boeke for “living lightly on the land,” Sea Ranch includes homes by Joseph Escherick, sea cliff condominiums by Moore, Lyndon, Turnbull and Whitaker, and landscape architecture by Lawrence Halprin, all of whom designed to respond to this dramatic coast’s natural elements.
The area offers hiking on miles of trails, beaches such as Black Point Beach, and activities at Sea Ranch's renowned Moonraker Recreation Center, with its heated pool, saunas, and tennis/pickleball court. The Rec Center is a mid-1960s structure with a wind-blocking wall, flying buttresses and “saddle bag bays,” plus the graphic design work of Barbara Stauffacher Solomon that covers its interior.
Sea Ranch Farm is a working farm located south of the Lodge using regenerative ranching and farming practices and a sustainable, closed-loop program to produce beef, lamb, nutrient dense eggs and veggies, cultivated mushrooms, pork, and honey from Italian beehives. Farm tours are available, with the option of a panoramic picnic on the hill above the bar.
Outside of Sea Ranch, the town of Gualala offers all necessary services with notable seafood restaurants, cafes and bakeries.
