Around
Lake Placid hosted the 1932 and the 1980 Winter Olympics, and is famous among winter-sports enthusiasts for its skiing. Whiteface Mountain (about 13 miles away) offers skiing, hiking, gondola rides, and mountain biking, and many people use the village as a base for climbing the 46 High Peaks in the Adirondack Mountains.
It is also near the West Branch of the Ausable River, well known for its fly fishing. There are hundreds of trails for hiking, cycling, skiing, swimming, fishing, birdwatching and horseback riding.
