Set high above the village of Yalikavak on Turkey's Bodrum Peninsula, this cottage features great views of the Yalikavak Marina to the west, the Greek island of Samos to the north, and Gundogan to the east. It is surrounded by 5,000 square meters of land, with 75-year-old Italian cypress trees (filled with birds and squirrels), lovely gardens, and fruit trees, and it looks out across a large field of lavender. 

The Iassus Suite is the largest of three suites on the property and is entered from the patio via an antique carved pine door. It boasts amazing light due to large glass and pine accordion-style French doors. There is a dining set and lounge bed. Outside, there's an intimate garden and Japanese oak dining table made from a 19th-century hot tub. 

Designed after the traditional Bodrum cottages found throughout the area, the home has been lightly renovated but retains its ancient and authentic Turkish construction. Adjacent to a central courtyard, the home's thick stone walls and original structural characteristics are simple and rustic with artistic decor and accents.

It is perfect for a couple (and perhaps one child), but other rentals on the property may be available for larger groups.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

Wifi throughout. The owner has a residence on the site. There is a friendly cat and dog on site. There is a kitchenette and private bathroom. The property does not have a pool, but there are many beaches nearby that can be reached within minutes. A car is highly recommended as the property is in the hills.

AROUND

One of the highest points on the Bodrum peninsula, this handcrafted stone house affords magnificent views of the Turkish coast as well as the Greek islands from Kalimnos to Samos. Perched above the village of Gokcobel, it is an excellent base for short trips to the local villages or to Bodrum City (25 minutes drive) and the greater peninsula.

The ancient city of Halicarnassus, the historic catacombs, the remains of the Legian Empire castle (dating from 500 BC), and the Roman aqueduct make for fascinating day trips. The picturesque village of Gumusluk is within a short drive as are the mountains in Labranda near Milas, where you'll encounter massive ancient stone structures. Ephesus is a two-hour drive and an easy day trip.

The new luxurious Yalikavak Marina is visible to the west, and the villages below offers shops and a large selection of restaurants along the water's edge. Sailboats, windsurfers, etc. are available for rent.

In season, ferries leave daily for many Greek Islands for day trips or longer. Kos Island is only 20 minutes away. Samos Island in Greece is 45km north.(Note: As of January 2021, the pandemic is restricting sea traffic between Turkey and Greece.)

BEST TIME TO VISIT: Summer days are balmy, generally breezy, and could be as much as 5C cooler than Yalikavak Village and Bodrum City. Evenings are perfect for outside dining, and the sunsets are always different and magnificent. The residence is also ideal for fall, winter, and spring visits as heating is included in the price, and warm bedding duvets provide exceptional comfort. Most restaurants have fireplaces and without crowds of tourists, the cuisine is at its best. Off-season visits are definitely recommended.
