A 13th-Century Farm Becomes an Intimate B&B

Sun, rocks, trees, and sea are the four defining elements that tell the story of this enchanting duo of residences from the 13th century, meticulously restored and surrounded by broom thickets and old oaks. Infused with infinite charms, the intimate B&B's four rooms stand in the shadow of UNESCO-classified, ancient archeological treasures and within the essential Cilento region, origin place of the modern Mediterranean Diet.

A 13th-Century Farm Becomes an Intimate B&B

Il Cannito is a small hotel situated on over 37 acres of the Capaccio (Salerno) hilltop area facing the temples of Paestum, within a landscape renowed for its historical importance and extraordinary archaeological sites, plus its place in modern history as the origin site that inspired the lauded Mediterranean Diet. Here, the fertile land, mild weather and typical flora and fauna make for a unique, natural environment.

The two weathered stone dwellings that form the property's heart have undergone a meticulous restoration with each detail carefully preserved, reflecting the architectural heritage of southern Italy’s countryside vernacular. Embracing the principles of bio-architecture, the buildings were restored using locally sourced and eco-friendly materials, such as the distinctive Capaccio calazio stone and handcrafted cotto tiles.

Four refined bedrooms furnished with designer pieces and paintings by renowned local artists are named after four elements: Sole, Mare, Terra, and Luna.

Luna offers double occupancy, a private outdoor living area, and a whirlpool tub.

Mare is a double room with a private outdoor lounge and shower.

Terra is a stone clad space for two with a private patio lounge and whirlpool tub.

Sole features an outdoor deck lounge off an in-room living area, plus a whirlpool tub.

All the rooms are equipped with high-tech amenities such as floor heating, LCD monitor, and Internet and videoconference access. The bathrooms are mini wellness areas where guests can relax in soothing hydro-massage and hydrosonic bathtubs and dedicate themselves to body care and comfort.

Created with the resolve to spread an innovative culture of tourism aimed at enhancing the natural resources instead of exploiting them, the B&B fuses financial, social and cultural values, adhering to a passion for nature with the entrepreneurial enterprise.

Experiences

Experiences include Mediterranean diet cooking classes (Ancel Keys' groundbreaking Mediterranean Diet originated in Pioppi, in the Cilento National Park), multisensory culinary tours of the Cilento region, and a farmhouse food and wine tour showcasing local products.

Around

Nestled just steps from the sun-kissed shores of Cilento, the B&B's ancient essence is interwoven with a modern architecture, creating a fusion of past and present. A swimming pool beckons, exteriors are meticulously manicured and breakfast is provided in an idyllic setting. The verdant canopy of oaks, elms, and junipers offers privacy and tranquility, with breathtaking views of the Valle dei Templi.

The Cilento coastline is framed by boundless expanses of olive groves and vineyards, with an invigorating atmosphere and the awe-inspiring landscapes of the Cilento National Park. Agrotourism flourishes here, land of extra virgin olive oil, Caciocavallo Podolico (cheese made exclusively with milk from the Podolica cows), Cacioricotta del Cilento, Mozzarella di bufala Campana PDO, the white fig of Cilento, chestnuts, artichokes, Vatolla onions, Controne beans, Alici di Menaica anchovies, bluefish, plus Cilento wines are all culinary treasures essential to the Mediterranean diet.

Il Cannito is located just a few kilometres from Paestum, a UNESCO World Heritage site named for the Greek God of the sea. Perched on the Sele plain, overlooking the serene waters of the Gulf of Salerno, Paestum offers a mesmerizing blend of archaeological grandeur and natural beauty.

The city walls are marked by four imposing gates and the main hamlets are represented by the Forum and the Temples. The Doric temples of Paestum, dedicated to Hera and Athena, are remarkably well-preserved, providing a glimpse into the golden age of Greek civilization. Beyond the city walls stands a labyrinth of necropolises and frescoed tombs now serving as open-air museums that showcase the lives of the ancient inhabitants. Don’t miss the Tomba del Tuffatore (Tomb of the Diver), one of the most beautiful in Paestum. Also not to be missed are Paestum's Agora, Amphitheater, Italic Temple, and Greek Bouleuterion.
