Much of the neighborhood is pedestrian, and it’s located across the Tiber River from Rome’s tourist center, with its narrow cobbled streets, bustling fountains and small, café-lined squares. Medieval houses make Trastevere extra photogenic by day, but the neighborhood really comes alive at night with the opening of its streetfront trattoria, pizzerias, cafes, and bars. A weekly flea market fills the Porta Portese each Sunday morning, when mass is also given inside the neighborhood’s mosaic-covered, medieval Basilica Santa Maria. Trek up top of Trastevere’s Colle di Gianicolo for a well-worth-the-effort view of downtown Rome.
