A 19th-Century Cotswold Stone Cottage Comes Alive with Color and Texture
Located in the pastoral heart of Upper Slaughter—one of England's few "Double Thankful Villages"—this Grade II listed residence captures the essence of 19th-century Cotswold vernacular. The renovation honors the 19th-century structure's honey-hued stone origins, layering them with a contemporary Farrow & Ball palette and high-end finishes. Beyond the wisteria-clad exterior, guests find a blend of antique structural beams and modern amenities, including a ceramic Kamado grill for alfresco dining. The cottage sleeps six guests comfortably.
The aesthetic is defined by texture: cool flagstones, rough-hewn timber, and soft linens. The living room centers around a log burner set within a massive stone hearth, perfect for cooler evenings. A rustic oak dining table serves as the communal hub, adjacent to a fabulously equipped kitchen designed for serious cooks. Throughout the home, natural stone tiles and period-appropriate fixtures maintain a cohesive, understated elegance.
A flagstone patio serves as the primary outdoor living area, equipped with a Kamado ceramic barbecue for smoking and grilling. The established garden frames the space with greenery, while a dedicated outdoor playroom provides a retreat for children. Parking is available for two cars directly outside.
Layout
The cottage accommodates six guests across three bedrooms. The first floor houses the master suite with a king-size bed and an en-suite featuring a freestanding roll-top bath. A second staircase leads through a low doorway to a twin room. The third bedroom offers a double bed and a built-in desk for remote work. There is a second family bathroom to serve the additional rooms.
Good to know
Due to the historic nature of the building, there are steep stairs and low doorways that require caution, making it less suitable for those with limited mobility. A car is recommended. The owners strictly prohibit fake tan to protect the linens. Wood for the burner is typically provided for the first night.
