A 12th Former Monastery, Nestled in the Bandol Wine Region, is Reborn
La Maison Long, a stone home originally built in the 12th century, has had many lives: part of a cloister, the owner’s grandparent’s nougat business, and at one point it housed an industrial horticulture business. Today it has been transformed through the lens of owners Stephanie and P.F., respecting the bones and filling it with personal, whimsical touches.
The couple spent seven years restoring the property, preserving structural anchors like the living room’s central pillar and vaulted ceilings and terracotta floors. Stroll under its Moorish-arched doorways and discover family heirlooms, art and treasures, plus two swings that hang from the ceiling (one is owner Stephanie’s) that visiting little ones can enjoy.
Continue your steps back through time in the Vintage Bedroom on the same floor. Here, a spectacular old iron bed mingles with a vintage school desk and there are traditional wood ceilings overhead.
On the third floor is a Master Bathroom (reached by a spiral staircase). This room, designed by Stephanie, has a large, minimalist shower clad with traditional blue cement tiles. An old window believed to have once been a monasterial prayer nest was restored, while a beautiful old door found in the house basement was added.
Bedroom By the River can be reached by a staircase in the living room (this time going down), and has an underground and monastic cave-like feel, enclosing you in its cool stone walls. A bowl from a family trip to Morocco receives a new life here as a sink.
Altogether, this vacation rental in France has four bedrooms and two bathrooms, accommodating up to six guests.
“For architecture enthusiasts and soulful home lovers who have an affinity for old stones and special places,” say the owners, "this is the place."
An Exciting Winemaking Region
Situated between Provence and Côte d'Azur, this vacation rental in France can be discovered within the heart of the medieval village of Ollioules (Var). There is a clutch of bakers, butchers, markets, cafes, restaurants, and art studios all within walking distance.
You're also in the pocket of the Bandol AOC region, where you can visit the local wineries and sample some of the most prestigious wines in all of France. The warm climate here provides perfectly for the late-ripening Mourvèdre grape (try one of its rosé wines!)
Beautiful villages, such as Sanary-sur-Mer, Le Castellet, St-Anne-D'Évenos, La Cadiére d'Azur, are just 15 minutes away.
Nature lovers, adventure travelers and those simply seeking inspiration should consider a day trip to the renowned bays of Calanques de Cassis, lying thirty minutes away from Ollioules. The area is renowned for having France's highest sea cliffs and a collection of natural inlets carved into the white limestone, formed 120 million years ago. You can hike it or see it by boat.
