A Former Artist's Atelier for Two near Uzès
Le Loft de l'Uzège is a single-level design loft for two in Sagriès, a small village in the Gard, set between Uzès and the Pont du Gard. It sits beneath the owners' own house, fully self-contained with its own entrance, terrace and carport, and until recently it was an artist's atelier. It still reads like one: a large, light room with its working bones left on show.
The owners are two creatives, a photographer and her partner, who kept running into the same gap in the rental market. There were plenty of design-led places for families and groups, but almost none made for two people, least of all with a dog. So they built one, slowly, doing much of the work themselves and letting the space decide what it needed. They kept the concrete columns, the raised concrete ceiling and a run of unrefined rock along one wall, left exactly as it was found.
Warm wood, linen and a few vintage pieces sit alongside details the owners designed themselves. Large timber-framed windows fill the open living space with light, and in the evening a 4K projector turns one wall into a cinema. The bedroom sits behind a large sliding door, private but still part of the loft's open character, and a walk-in wardrobe by the entrance swallows the luggage.
A private terrace opens off the living room, kitchen and bedroom, shaded through the day by a mature fig tree and sail canopies, and looks out over olive trees, cypresses and the vineyards beyond. There's an outdoor shower under the fig tree for the hot stretch of the afternoon, and when the figs are ripe you're welcome to pick them. Past the garrigue and the quiet lane, the Gorges du Gardon begins more or less at the doorstep.
Layout
This vacation home for rent in Sagriès sleeps up to two guests. It is a single-level 100 m² loft on the private lower level of the house, entered through its own door. Past a walk-in wardrobe, the open-plan living space includes a kitchen, dining area and lounge. The bedroom sits behind a large sliding door, and the bathroom has a walk-in shower with the WC enclosed separately. The terrace opens off the living room, kitchen and bedroom. The layout is designed for two and takes no additional beds.

It is designed for two and takes no extra beds, so it does not suit groups or families. Well-behaved dogs are welcome at no charge, with small to medium dogs best suited to the space. The loft is entirely smoke-free, and the setting is quiet. A car is recommended, as the best of the area sits off the bus routes.

Around
Uzès is five minutes away: a small medieval city built around the arcaded Place aux Herbes, where the Saturday morning market fills the square with Gard produce, cheese and, in winter, black truffles. The surrounding Uzège grows olives and the wines of the Duché d'Uzès appellation, and its hills draw regular comparison with Tuscany. The villages are worth visiting. Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie, a few minutes north, has been a pottery town for centuries and still keeps working studios, while hilltop Castillon-du-Gard and, further out, Lussan make good reasons to take the long way round. Closer still, the Gorges du Gardon, a UNESCO biosphere reserve, offers marked hikes through the garrigue and green-water swimming. Canoes launch from Collias downriver toward the Pont du Gard, the Roman aqueduct and World Heritage site about 15 minutes away.

Best time to visit
Late spring and early autumn, when the garrigue is warm and the markets are at their best. High summer is hot and made for the terrace, the outdoor shower and the river.
