Keeping It Neutra in the Hollywood Hills
This holiday home in the Hollywood Hills is the ultimate haven for mid-century enthusiasts, considering it was designed in 1958 by Richard Neutra— the father of mid-century modern, no less. The current owner worked with LA-based architecture firm Marmol Radziner to restore and expand Lew House, filling it slowly with all that she loves.
Keeping It Neutra in the Hollywood Hills
Experience the Lew House, designed and built by world-renowned architect Richard Neutra, father of mid-century modernism, Southern California's signature style. Located in the hills above the Sunset Strip with dazzling views of the city, this holiday home in Los Angeles was the former home of film producer Stokely Chaffin, who made such arthouse hits as Sweet Home Alabama, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Freddy vs. Jason, and Snakes on a Plane.
Featured in Interior Design, Dwell, Elle Decor, and The LA Times Magazine, the house is laid out elegantly over three floors. Restorations and an additional level at the iconic property were added by Marmol Radziner, and the home is an impeccable example of the period.
We love how this glassy home with its magnificent views above the fabled Sunset Plaza exudes a sincere sense of soul and lived-in wellbeing.
Laid out on three levels, the home is refined and elegant with the kitchen, living room, and a bedroom on the entry-level and the master, secondary bedroom and family area located on the mid-level. The recently added third level, with an additional kitchen, bathroom, and guest bedroom opens out to the fabulous pool and gardens. Tasteful furniture combining mid-century with contemporary, pieces, and dark wood floors compliment the light-filled space throughout.
Filled with a carefully curated selection of one-of-a-kind pieces by mid-century luminaries Vladimir Kagan, Paul McCobb, TH Robsjohn-Gibbings, and Milo Baughman, in addition to original art by LA artists, the home is a showcase of period style.
There are four luxurious ensuite bedrooms. The Fireplace Room, the Deck Room, and the Original Master all have some of the best views in the house, while the Pool Room includes its own kitchen and bath, and a luxurious mix of city and garden views.
The private grounds are flat and grassy with a saltwater pool and lounge areas overlooking the iconic LA skyline. A rare opportunity to experience the work of Neutra nestled among the famous hills of Hollywood.
Above Sunset
A half-mile up into the hills, it's the perfect distance to get great views of - but not to hear too much of - Sunset Blvd and West Hollywood, the heart of nightlife, design, great restaurants, and shopping in Los Angeles. It's a five- to 10-minute drive from Nobu, the Ivy, the Chateau, Beverly Hills Hotel, Sunset Tower, Pacific Design Center, and Rodeo Drive.
The neighborhood is adjacent to, and ideally situated for, access to the rest of the best of LA. Further east is the resurrected and thriving Downtown district, and a half-hour west are the coastal area beaches of Santa Monica and Venice, with Malibu and the Santa Monica mountains for the best of west coast recreation.
