Gustav Eiffel’s apprentice Raul Mesnier designed and built the neo-Gothic Elevador de Santa Justa where you’ll get the same kind of sweeping city views as its cousin in Paris.

The old tram system is great for navigating the ornate cobblestone streets that twist through town and up and down the seven hills. Follow the unmistakable tunes into any Casa de Fado and be treated to the haunting and emotional voice of Portugal. Barrio Alto and the riverfront neighborhood of Cais do Sodre are the nightlife hotspots.

If you’re still upright, watch the sun rise and wait for the local cafes to open for a traditional bifana (pork bun) or famous egg tarts (pasteis de nata).
