Slow Living with Urban, Vintage Flair
Holding court on a gentle hilltop in a region referred to as France’s “Tuscany,” this polished country manor has been transformed into a slow-living destination with just the right touch of sophistication. The four-suite boutique hotel is that rare rural inn where living to a quieter rhythm still comes delightfully splashed with cool, mid-century modern and contemporary global design. The stylish spot serves up intimate, fairytale breakfasts and farm-to-table dinners under the walnut trees, plus it has all the charming nooks needed to tuck into a good book, unwind with a glass of rosé, or breathe deeply after a brisk country walk. Book one suite for two guests, or book all four for larger groups.
Halcyon Hideaway in the French Countryside
Framed by centuries-old trees on four hectares in Gascony’s rolling hills—the favored hunting grounds of King Henri IV, some half a millennium ago—this tiny boutique hotel’s four suites surprise with their timeless design and attentive styling. A relaxed elegance reigns at the country manor, the creation of a Swiss couple living the Southern French dream. Rather than fill the home and farm with the requisite shabby chic or stuffy antique furnishings, the two have put their love of mid-century modern design and contemporary art and décor on full display.
The 300-year-old, rustic farm suite, La Ferme, still showcases its time worn, wood beams overhead, paired with mid-century modern fixtures and a rich décor palette of sultry, smoky blue-greens to greys. La Ferme has its own kitchen, a spacious terrace, and original fireplace. The three unique suites within the manor house feature contemporary art and design pieces, many gathered from the owners’ travels. Think large-scale photography, Moroccan rugs, Italian linens, and classic vintage furnishings and fixtures.
The saltwater swimming pool is framed by three centenary olive trees and flowering oleander bushes, with sun loungers and umbrellas set against the leafy backdrop that looks over the rolling countryside. A shared living room in the manor features a library, salon and turntable. By-reservation dinners are definitively farm-to-table, supplemented by seafood from the not-too-distant coastline, and served with regional wines and aged Armagnacs from nearby vintners, supplemented by herbs and produce from the manor’s own garden.
Around
Gascony is located in France’s southwestern corner, a photo-worthy landscape quilted with rolling green hills, giant plots of sunflowers, and striped vineyards. The region is so picturesque that it’s home to 17 of the Most Beautiful Villages in France, a designation that includes the nearby (18 kilometers) village, Le Romieu, in addition to Fourcès, Penne-d’Agenais, and Monflanquin, and others. Village market days present storybook spreads of produce, artisanal cheeses and charcuterie, and regional wines and Armagnacs available for tasting here and at the nearby vineyards' authentic, low-key locations. The Saturday market at Nérac is not to be missed, and Lectoure’s Farmers’ Market rivals the village's medieval maze of streets and its antique shops in capturing attention.
Gascony is great for cycling, and the property owners can assist with traditional or electric bike rentals as well as guide recommendations. A popular way to visit the area’s vineyards and Armagnac houses is by guided bike tour, and dozens of area wineries open their doors for friendly tastings and casual tours. This is rural France, so village churches and tree-lined squares with local cafes are abundant, and narrow country crossroads come marked by crosses and wells. The Landes de Gasogne Regional Nature Park offers gentle hiking loops in the wetlands near the Atlantic coast, and the gastronomically rich region of the Dordogne is about 60 kilometers away, with an easy day trip to slurp oysters in Cap Ferret can be had in less than two hours.
